OP you seem nice. I want you in my neighborhood!!

Thank you, I am not actually always nice, but it's always nice to hear that. FWIW, if you're Hearst or Ross, you've sold me on looking at them again.

And we're actually going to see the Shepherd house. I called. Something about it--probably the fact that it's huge and a house--makes me want to move there. I'm going to check on the other links here tomorrow too.

There has been some back and forth on a local listserve about a new policy prohibiting children aged three and above from accompanying an adult into an opposite sex changing room. The old policy was age 6 IIRC.
What? I wouldn't send a 3yo DS into the men's changing room by himself. Maybe they have individual family changing rooms.
the link still says 6 years old.

And that boundary map thing is amazing. Thanks so much.

That is nothing compared to New York's draconian "wear a plain white t shirt, bring a towel, lock everything else in your locker and stand in line for 45 minutes (in the sun) to get into the pool."

Ladies, I can't thank you enough. We just got the final offer and so this is totally on. Husband starts May 1st and we're going to be trailing behind and figuring out this school stuff going back and forth from New York. Coming down next week to scope things out and look at a few places, although it's probably not smart to look at them before I tour schools, which are closed. But I may be stalking some playgrounds....

Some pool staff are a little over the top in terms of enforcement. I have seen mothers asked to leave the pool deck oare because they weren't wearing "appropriate" attire, notwithstanding the fact DH was sitting in the wading pool with their child. I was also challenged on ce as to whether the swimming trunks worn under my board shorts were prohibited as underwear. You might find this map of boundaries helpful in navigating the school choice complex.

I love all the areas you mention... so there's Powell, West, Ross...?

Tubman in Columbia Heights, Powell and Barnard in Petworth, Bancroft in Mt. Pleasant, Garrison in U Street/Logan, Ross in Dupont. West is in 14th Street Heights - slightly north of Petworth and not as walkable. You might even check out Takoma which is crunchy/hip, affordable, everyone has a yard, and the school is getting the gentrification treatment in a way that seems to have parents working together from what I can tell.

Apologies if someone already answered - multitasking at work.

P.S. I wouldn't go by Craigslist for rentals. It's been a while since I've rented but the real estate section at www.popville.com always has a mix of apts, condos and houses for rent from legitimate brokers.

I forgot Logan Circle and Shaw, where you're more likely to find brownstone-like architecture. Beautiful old Victorians. Garrison and/or Cleveland would be the elementary schools to look into.

Public pools are very laid back.

WAY more relaxed here. A lot of residents in the more suburban areas have memberships to neighborhood pools etc. = less people vying for the public ones.

Capitol Hill can't compete with the Wilson facility but does have the neighborhood Rumsey Acquatic Center. The Hains Point (seasonal), Deanwood and Turkey Thicket natatoria (?) are also very close. Many families also join outdoor pools in nearby suburban PG County or even the Capitol Skyline Hotel down by Nats Stadium!
