Good point. I think the same competitive parents whose kids do not get into the HGC will later get into the middle school magnets. I know many. And even if they do not go to middle school magnet their kids will do well in their local middle school and go on to do very well in high (magnet or non magnet). I know many.

I live in a W district but I don't know how parents are treating this process because we are not currently at our public ES and I haven't talked about applying with our neighbors. We didn't prep and are ok if our child "misses out". We think it would be a great experience if child is accepted though.

To me, I'd think it would be families outside of the W districts that would have more at stake in the HGC process if they felt that their schools were not up to par and that the HGC would make a big difference in comparison. It wouldn't seem unreasonable to me that a family with enough financial resources in such a district might want to invest as much as possible to help their child get to the HGC.

But who knows? There are plenty of competitive parents in the W's....

No I did not - but I will not be crushed if child isn't accepted. Everything will be okay and there are plenty of other opportunities in the future.

Hey, you may still have some time if your child hasn't taken it due to postponement.

Review basic math facts, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction, order of operations, shapes, area, perimeter and areas and perimeters of squares and rectangles, mean, median, mode, range, < or > or = relationships between integers, simple fractions, and simple math statements; synonyms antonyms for fun, basic grammar: noun, verb object, adjective. Prep your child in these domains well (doesn't take much time) but there must be no doubt or equivocation regarding these simple manipulations. Don't forget time (digital and analogue) for fun time problem solving exercises. Also practice a few pattern recognition fun exercises (like the second grade Raven) This is fun and healthy desert.

Prep by reviewing this material with your child and come back in February or March and tell the world your child got in without prep.

test already taken - too late

I have not heard many poster advocating you must prep and enrich your children even though many would acknowledge most mid to high SES do precisely this, if their children do not. what I hear is many here simply exaggerate the issue of lack of prep in much the same way they did with their peers in primary and secondary school.

I believe this phenomenon.

Anonymous wrote:Please remind me....are we talking about 3rd graders here - the HGC test???

My DS got into the HGC without any prep - he just went in, took the test and did well. There was no pressure on him from us, his parents, or anyone else to freak out about the test or "prep" for it. He was in third grade, after all.

If these parents are like this with their 3rd graders, I really feel badly for these kids as they approach the challenges (not just academic) of middle school, AP classes in high school, etc.

Again, as some of the PPs mentioned, the HGC test is kind of a "common sense" test - by looking at the question you either get it or you don't.

Amen - I can only hope there are more out there like you

Really? If I say that my child got in without study or prep, then I am lying? (Or being sarcastic? I'm not sure how that would be sarcasm.) How do you know this?
