I'm trying to be polite. We realize their are lunatics in every religion but radical views seem more mainstream in Islam and there have been some high profile incidents. Islamic countries are often intolerate and cruel Saudi and Iran come to mind first. It's scary that such a small minority would make demands. I have many Hindu friends and never has this come up.

I am not a Christian, Jew or Muslim.

I vote for MCPS holding a Carnival similar to the Carnival of Brazil (which is an annual festival held during the Friday to the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent, the forty-day period before Easter).

Make it mandatory for all students to participate. Make participation in HS (at least once) a graduation requirement.

NP here and I see this discussion is pretty wide ranging but how have we gone through 10 pages of posts and no one has no one told OP that "Asians" don't all celebrate Tet and that it's a massive continent that includes 48-56 countries depending on how you count them??

SERIOUSLY OP? Are you truly that ignorant or are you just racist?

Yuk. This is a non-issue. Please don't add the discussion of religious holidays into the mix of other, more important issues that MCPS faces right now.

Anonymous wrote:OP, you were throwing around the "disingenuous" accusation pretty freely a few pages ago.

You know what I think is disingenuous? Your knowingly starting a thread that would stir up passions about Muslims in MoCo, insisting over and over again that this is "a Christian nation" (even after claiming you only mean population, you won't just say that--you keep mouthing the "Christian nation" mantra), keeping the pot stoked and the flame stirred over 9 pages of posts, and then blushing, "Oh, me? No, I'm just being practical. No snark or smugness here."

I rather doubt you care that passionately about whether our schools do or don't add another holiday. You're stirring up anti-Muslim feeling here (or anti-anyone-not-Christian) and you know it.

I brought up the Christian nation thing, and I'm not the OP. And I maintain: This is a Christian nation. All of our culture and conventions reflect that. I'm sorry that bothers you, but it doesn't change the reality.

I'm not stirring up anything. I certaintly didn't "knowingly start a thread that would sir up passions about Muslims in MoCo." I was reacting to something someone else posted.

To further bore down on this, there are 8 congregations of Muslims in MoCo., with 18,426 adherents. That's about 1.5% of MoCo's population.

By comparsion, there are 185,000 Catholics, 150,000 Christians (split between mainline and evangelical), 84,000 Jews. Since someone brought up Hindus, there are 17 Hindu congregations -- twice as many as Muslims.

So, yeah, this request is just dumb.

There you go again. Pretty much putting the lie to your "I was only talking about majority population" contention.

Great that you're not the OP. Everything else I said seems pretty much accurate. Especially the disingenuous part. (That was you slinging that term, wasn't it? Next time you pass one, look in the mirror.)

But that doesn't happen in Egypt, and Christians are also treated like shit in a variety of other ways.

However, that has absolutely NOTHING to do with this topic. We live in America, we believe in equality and fairness. Well, that IS pretty much exactly what happened to the christians in Lebanon....

My mother is descended from Lebanese Christians. I have studied the country in depth. This is not at all what happened in Lebanon.

Yes, folks, here is the request as I understand it. MoCo Muslims would like the schools to be closed on their holidays. The school board said they don't close on religious holidays, but if enough students were absent on those holidays, that would justify the schools' closure. That is the same justification that has been repeated here many times for closing on Jewish holidays. Therefore, the Muslim community asked that non-Muslims stay home in order to show solidarity and help justify a closure. If you don't support the Muslims' request, simply send your kids to school that day. There is no reason to bring up Dubai, Egypt, or Lebanon. There is no reason to discuss Sharia or accuse Muslims getting ready to attack people in the streets. Simply send your kids to school. On the other hand, if you want to support the Muslim community, keep your kids home. Seems pretty simple and non-controversial to me.

Because closing MCPS schools for 2 major Muslim holidays, in addition to 2 major Christian holidays and 2 major Jewish holidays, is pretty much the same as declaring Islam the legally-established religion of the US?

Don't worry, that's just the first step. I'm sure in a decade or two they will ask for it. They did in every other country they moved to.

Somebody send an e-mail to WTOP and tell them that one of their commenters is lost on the wrong website.

Go ahead and assume that what happened to Christians in Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, and what is currently happening in England, for example, where people are being slaughtered in broad daylight by men screaming "alla-u-akbar" will never happen where you live.

Most Muslims in the US were born right here. No moving involved.

Most of the European muslims were born there too. After their parents moved there. Doesn't make them any more European, unfortunately, because they are raised on their parents' values, not the values of the country they were born in.

Europe is a completely different beast than the US. And Muslim values are not antithetical to American values. Many are extremely similar.
