I'm sorry but the more I read about this the more I don't understand what on Earth this woman was thinking. You have a weird kid with developmental disorders who is known for being antisocial and couldn't make it in the regular school system, and let you teach him how to shoot guns and apparently leave him with access to them.

GUN CONTROL NOW. Lunatic. I want our sanctioned militia (i.e. police, military) to go door to door through every community to search for an collect all guns that fire multiple rounds with one shot. I don't give a damn if it's PC to say that, that's how I feel. I am sick to death of worrying if my kid's school, or my office, or the restaurant we randomly choose to eat in one night, will be the scene of the next massacre.

Why would an American want to "further discourage gun totin'"? The fact that the school was a "gun free zone", aka "criminal protection zone", probably added to the number of victims. Where I live, we all carry and crime is extremely low. Cowards like that shooter almost always choose soft targets as victims.

I dont understand the aversion to the pp. There's quotes in the New York Times of a neighbor that says something like no one really knew her - only rang her bell at Halloween. The lack of a sense of community and knowing your neighbors is a problem. Its always these loners too. Upon reflection everyone seems to say they weren't surprised. Maintaining a connection with members of your community is the first defense and ultimately easier to implement then new laws or overreactions. I honestly don't see how explaining this is worthy of being labeled a moron. And, I bet you as expert sociologists are consulted you will hear a lot more about it. Guns have been available forever in this country but its only recently that these crazy events have been occurring. We need to address the problem.

The point is you think that you can know your neighbors and still not be aware of whatever twisted thoughts are in their feverish head. 1st PP thinks he knows what his neighbors are capable of based on the fact that he waves to them when he goes to pick up his paper or shares a hot dog with them in his backyard. We have block parties and barbecues in my neighborhood. There are 38 houses on my 20016 block. Do I know every family? No. Even if I did, wtf. That doesn't mean I presume to know what the hell they're really capable of under extreme duress. Again, Nazi Germany. And for what it's worth, southern Connecticut is a haven for German-American immigrants. My family is from there. Many of them are former Hitler youth, and Nazi sympathizers and retired Big Blue execs.

Firearms are used much, much more often to protect people than they are ever used to kill the innocent. Often without a shot being fired. In addition, studies have shown that the ONLY thing that has shown to be effective in deterring and preventing this many people from being shot is the presence of an armed intervention (be it police or a citizen) and that concealed carry laws have been effective in bringing down crime rates.

As for the Second Amendment, read Federalist paper #29 for an education.

This reminds me of the recent thread, "my friend's toddler has died". The young boy died in the care of his father after a judge refused to restrict visitation - although "All the signs" were there. We live in a society where we don't presume guilt or often, the predisposition to a crime. That's a tragedy. What can we do to change our society to consider risk or likelihood of violence instead of only wringing our hands after the fact?

I imagine the mother, if she had lived, would have suffered terribly for the rest of her life. That said, what an odd dismissal of someone's right to live. Maybe she would have wanted to live. Maybe she could have accomplished good things with the rest of her life. Maybe there are people - such as her other son, her friends and relatives - who love her and needed her to live.
She showed that she didn't value her own life or that of others by keeping accessible guns in a home with a mentally unstable young man. There were a million other, more productive ways she could have spent her time and yet she spent her time at the gun range learning how to, presumably, shoot other people so don't preach to me about all the good she would have done if she had lived. She would have spent the rest of her life fighting lawsuits and living like a social pariah.

Why the eyeroll? It is not wrong. Did you visit the website? You can buy weapons there, and they advertise that they sell weapons used by foreign military as well (but cannot ship outside the US). They write that depending on your state, a declaration of age is needed to buy certain items, like ammunition.
And to the other poster: It is not fear mongering. Military grade, yes. Weapons used by our military, by special forces, etc. Have you seen what type of weapons are for sale for anyone in this country? Visit a gun forum, where private gun owners post about their favorite weapons (and shipment times and condition of package from cheaperthandirt.com, too!) Before you accuse someone, do some simple research.

Additionally, he couldn't have purchased a handgun until he was 21 (and met the other requirements of course); http://www.cga.ct.gov/2009/pub/chap529.htm#Sec29-34.htm. There are some reports that he tried to purchase long guns from Dick's Sporting Goods and was denied but law enforcement hasn't verified that yet. Still, he would've had to go through the checks that both CT and the feds require regardless of if he purchased locally or online. Online dealers are not exempt from the same transfer requirements as local dealers.


You have no idea when his mother (or he) purchased the gun. It could have been before CT passed the new stricter laws.
