Anonymous wrote:(sigh) ya know this Roth stuff is pretty basic and the kind of advice you'd read in the WSJ, Barron's, and even in the business page of the Post. That it's got some of you all wound up like its taking a suitcase of cash to the Caymans really says more about you and your financial literacy.
Why do a Roth for teenagers? so they learn early about the power of saving and compounding. I wish I'd learned in my teens--i'd be much better off for it. This is not some secret club kind of sophisticated strategy--in fact my plumber is doing it for his kid who helps on the job.
btw I think it's safe to assume, by now, we've driven off the OP.

Ummm, the most wealthy among us who won't be able to conspicuously consume as much b/c they have to pay a few extra thousand in taxes? Wah wah wah.
There's been no such complaining on this thread.
That was the PREMISE of this entire thread. "Obama won the election and now we are FUCKED! Oh, no!!!!!! How are we going to preserve our fortunes?"
Yours is an overwrought response to a fact-based discussion. Unless you are OP and know something that was never stated in the thread. Some of us were simply discussing personal finances.

Anonymous wrote:HHI of 400k here... what I'll be doing in 2013: paying more in taxes and glad to do it. If you're in the 1% and you're complaining about a few thousand bucks in taxes, money that you would otherwise have socked under the mattress anyway, you're scum. Do you really think we can go on as a prosperous country with rates at a near all-time low? We're quickly losing ground in all the important areas (education, health, happiness, environment, energy, etc) compared to nations that have tax rates MUCH higher than ours.

Jeff, can we start a First World Problems forum so the rest of us don't even have to read the titles of this tripe?
News flash: You don't have to read every title/thread. Some of us enjoy learning things from more knowledgeable people.
As do I. I just don't even want to know that shallow, greedy people are looking for ways to save a few thousand in taxes. Guess where I would never click? The "First World Problems" forum. All of your Richie Riches can go there and bitch about your terrible lot in life, and the rest of us will be happy to see you go.

How can you be 1%ers and eligibile to open a Roth? We're 5%ers and still not eligible for Roth. Are you talking about converting a traditional and taking the tax hit in 2012?
Yes, converting and paying $350,000 tax in 2012 on the conversion.
That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. But thanks for your contribution.
Do you earn >$1M a year and have a net worth >$5M? Are you a financial advisor? Will your total taxes increase by $50,000 to $100,000 next year? I'm just trying to guesstimate the depth of your knowledge.
No, but if I did, I would try to focus more on all the blessings I have, rather than freaking out because my enormous income will be reduced marginally by future taxes.[/quote]
Pretty much this.
