Another YY family that is very happy at the school. We are really more about the Nature Center, outdoor classrooms, and IB instruction, and are really looking forward to the treehouse classroom. All this and bilingual teaching too - it's a wonderful new model for public education.

20:40 here. I'm a parent with a kid in K at YY. Very happy with the school and if that makes me a "booster" so be it.

^^ Agreed. Great school with beautiful facilities. The current K grew from 107 kids in preK to 114 kids in K. Looks like no one is pulling their kid for another DC school since YY found a permanent location. Their retention rate is only getting better and the school is growing out of their growing pains and have very happy families.

We moved to DC specifically for Yu Ying. We already owned a place in NoVA. I know another YY family that specifically came to DC for Yu Ying, I'm sure there are several others.

YY is a great school. Bilingual education is a great gift to our kids. For the others out there -- yes, there are other great schools in DC, and no, YY is not everything for everybody. But for the vast majority of its families, YY is a great school.

It's a shame because she could have actually helped them make a great school. It's pretty funny to hear the older students "speak" Chinese DC-style.

Don't worry. The only public DC school she was interested in is Yu Ying. She has a well-known Chinese voice and isn't interested in any school that doesn't take Chinese seriously. I've heard she's at a high-profile private, and I hope she, and her child, and the family in general are happy there. The school is lucky to have them.

NP. There's another school that teaches Chinese and not in a once or twice a week enrichment class for younger kids? Please share. Would love to know the school if we don't get into YY. Thanks!

WIS. ~30K per year. Bilingual programs in Spanish, French, and Dutch in the elementary years. Chinese is an option for middle school. The aforementioned parent is professionally recognized for her Mandarin, her child won't get to officially study Chinese until 6th grade, but the at-home instruction will be top-notch. Her expertise is unfortunately lost to both the Yu Ying community and the WIS community (which doesn't value Chinese highly enough to offer it in the elementary grades).

She could have become a DC resident and stayed at Yu Ying!

Looks like if YY did not favor such a "well known Chinese voice", the chances of them giving preference and gaming the system to anyone else is just about nil.
