We had to eat a lot of things, weren't forced to, but there was nothing else. Such as liver and onions (Why did so many parents serve this??) and plain oatmeal... for days.

Oh man, I remember this onion/honey cure too. I'm the garlic/milk person as well. Is your mom from eastern europe too?

Milk boiled with garlic, as some sort of Eastern-European cure for random ailments (cold, allergies, etc). Oh, and the pumpkin soup a PP referenced...it was just pumpkin, water, milk(?) and elbow macaroni thrown in for good measure. Maybe some spices. Ugh. She is a much better cook now.

Like an earlier poster mentioned, we lived on a super strict budget, and I was never spoiled but Mom never made me eat anything I didn't want. This did not effect me negatively. I took it as a sign of love and respect and grew up to have super healthy eating habits.

That said, she was a great cook so there wasn't much I wouldn't eat, which helps and what also helped was the fact that we all sat at the kitchen table for dinner every night.

I have a friend whose mom could only make tuna sandwiches and spaghetti and she looooved eating at my house. I always felt so bad for her.

the roadkill and grape juice/raw egg stories are killing me!

we were never foeced to eat anything we didn't like. we had to at least try things, but nothing forced beyond that - other than milk. yuck. had to have one full glass every night. all that said, we had a weekly treat of bacon flavored spray cheese on ritz crackers. cannot imagine even smelling that now. food options sure were different 30 years ago!
