I mean, if it's a hot day at the park, taking a long walk, running after a toddler, what the heck else can you wear if you're over 40? I'm sure as heck not going to wear shorts - impractical on many levels, and also very unflattering on me. Skirts also impractical.

I think OP went overboard suggesting shorts are better than capris because, for many women (especially middle-aged and older) they are not. That said, why not just wear full length pants and jeans. How is that inconvenient? Are you walking through water or something?
Can you say "105 degrees and humid??" You want to run around in the sun after a toddler in full length pants in VA in the summer? I'm not wearing them to work or anything. Just for walking, playing, casual shopping.
I don't see how capris provide that much heat relief compared to full length pants. It's much more about material the pants vs. capris are made of.
