Hi! If you do a net search for "WISC IV Technical Report #3" or "WISC IV Technical Report #4" you will find, in PDF format, the technical studies that have shown that this form of the WISC is producing lower than 130 FSIQ's in gifted groups of children. It is very encouraging for us parents whose children have VCI/PRI scores in the mid-to-low 120's and WMI/PSI scores in the average range. That seems to be the profile that gifted groups are demonstrating in the studies that support the use of WISC-IV scores for academic placement. I have to believe that the appeals committee in Fairfax is familiar with these studies and understands the basic profiles of gifted chidlren. Let's hope, anyway! We also asked our psychologist to put the GAI on my child's score sheet. Her FSIQ is 132 and her GAI is 135. Not much difference but the GAI is the general ability index which uses the VCI and PRI scaled scores to calculate. I have read on some websites that the GAI score is geared more towards the actual gifted ability of the child. I am concerned about appealing with a FSIQ 132 and a GBRS of 9, but I have sealed the envelope and I am sending it today. We have decided what happens, happens and if she is still denied we will see what her 3rd grade teacher in gen ed says next year and if we need too we will try for 4th grade. Good luck!!!!

I would still apply.I feel if you had the test done and don't apply you will always wonder what if. If you apply and do not get accepted you can wait until next year use the same WISC score and maybe the teacher will give your dc a higher GBRS. I think your score is good though. If you read the article on the other thread it states that a 127 instead of a 130 is where the mark is for giftedness.So in your case being one point away in a test that has a 5 point margin in either direction means your child is in the gifted range.Sending you good luck and good wishes.

Cogat is 118.

Does anyone have experience appealing with a WISC in the mid 120's? I'm in the same boat and wonder if others have been successful (seems like most posters here have WISC scores off the charts). Anyone get in with lower scores? Thanks!

Yes defintely appeal.You went through the trouble of having your child tested so it cannot hurt to give it a try. Your scores are good.Thinking good thoughts for you.

P.S. What were the NNAT and CogAT scores? Any gems there?

Definitely appeal. The VCI is the best predictor of giftedness and 126 is in the range. Go for it. And best of luck!

and has GBRS of 11 I am not sure to appeal or not..any thoughts?

No reason to be nervous....For two reasons: 1) it will not help as you are not taking the test, and 2) your DS might pick up on the nervousness which will not help.

I am getting my ds tested this weekend. I am a little nervous. Anyone else in the same boat?
