How about whether to hold an A meet on July 4th, simply because it's a Saturday, or do the right thing and have the meet on Friday the 3rd?
Pools are running meets on national holidays?
Wait until I tell you about the baseball and soccer tournaments on Memorial Day. You’ll be shocked that an event from 8:00 to 10:30 am would happen on July 4th.
Not the best comparison given that many places have parades, etc. on the morning of July 4th. Our swim team always participates in our town’s parade and building our float, etc is a highlight of the summer.
Plus, with Memorial Day sports tournaments your whole weekend is already shot. You are also playing on Saturday and Sunday. Moving summer swim meets to the morning of July 3rd lets families that want to get out of town for (most of) the long weekend do so while still making the meet.
Hard to see any good reason not to move meets to July 3.
Also worth noting that Memorial Day tournaments are voluntary. Teams choose to sign up for them. Many teams choose not to so as not to impact the holiday weekend.
…also worth noting that swim meets are voluntary…
You seem obsessed with having meets on the holiday. Fits the title of this thread. Good to see that many teams are taking the more rational approach and agreeing to move to July 3.
Quite the leap to get obsessed here. Are you familiar with the 4th of July Vienna Relays? A meet run annually on…no, you’ll never guess when.
Never heard of them.
We will be spending July 4th with our kids on the swim team float at our town parade and then at our pool’s 4th of July party (which starts at 10am, right after the parade).. We are quite happy that our meet was moved to July 3 to allow our swimmers to participate in these fun annual events.
And I’ve never heard of a town parade in NVSL territory 🤷🏽♀️

We loosely asked about waitlists and were told pool has a long one and they don't do line cuts for fast swimmers. We have pride in getting what we can from the middling division range, and repping our immediate neighborhood.
We also knew moving pools would create some awkward situations with classmates, friends whose kids would get bumped if we rolled over to their pool and frankly weren't sure it would be an all-around welcome.
Would have been fun to feel rush of being a big dog for sure ... especially because the B meet swimmers at that pool mock our kids for their significantly lower division standing.
Why do people feel the need to say top tier d1-d3, when really they mean d3? The d1 teams don't need this nonsense and have sufficient depth across the age groups they dont need your all star kid to be competitive.
(Fellow NVSL D1 parent here): That’s really only true for Tuckahoe, and maybe Chesterbrook in some age groups. I’m certain the other D1 teams would welcome new pool members whose kids are also excellent teammates and swimmers. I mean, per above, OKM lost 6 of their fastest kids to military or other moves just this year, and Oakton has huge age group gaps. The only thing holding these teams back from gaining new teammates is a waitlist (except OKM, which has no waitlist but is significantly farther away from the other 5 teams).

In 2015, only one meet shifted to Friday. https://mynvsl.com/schedules?year=2015&div=&date=20150703
Same situation, Independence Day on an NVSL Saturday, would have occurred in 2020 .. but COVID happened in case anyone forgot. Not a lot of old timers from 2015 are still around.
Division 1 NVSL I believe is switching to Friday this year.
We're on one of these teams and this is not the case for our team/meet at least.
I know Tuckahoe wanted to run theirs on the 4th
Why? Not being snarky, just curious.
Tuckahoe member here - my understanding is the lap swimming community (which is quite large) did not want to give up the lane time on Friday since Saturday/the 4th is pretty much entirely designated to families regardless if there is a swim meet on that day.
Yeah, that's not accurate or how it works, but thanks for pushing your best guess into the DCUM gossip thread.

You think it would be fun to feel the rush of being on a team that mocks others? You "get what you can" from your local pool?
I'm not sure what you mean by "it does happen"? It sounds like the pool told you that jumping the line doesn't happen and you're sad you can't join the team of bullies who have completely missed the point of rec sports.

Nope. But a bunch are happening on July 3.
Ours is for sure on the 3rd and is listed as the 4th here. I think it's not updated fully.
We are also on the 3rd (thankfully) but it doesn’t show on the NVSL schedule.
