My son is heading to Penn State. So, I am not a Penn State hater by any means but it is surprisingly easy to get in if you are OOS and you apply to certain colleges (Education and Agriculture).

Was just coming here to say this. As someone who once lived adjacent to the campus in the 90s then moved to DC, I never understood why Minnesota (and Minneapolis in general) was not much more popular with the DMV crowd. Especially those with strong average kids. Thinking about the people who get excited about Pitt, Delaware, Indiana and JMU OOS. EspPESHally those that cannot shut up about Pitt and how fun Pittsburgh is. I mean, I like it too -- no shade -- but have you spent time in Minneapolis?

If you're willing to accept the weather in Pittsburgh and/or Newark DE is a good enough city for you, then you really owe it to yourself to explore U of Minn

UC Merced has a very high acceptance rate. ASU has also always had a high acceptance rate. You can get a very good STEM or social sciences education from either school though not sure about humanities. However, you aren’t going to graduate with an engineering degree at any UC or ASU if you can’t do math and physics. These schools are good for the kid that messed up in high school but is really smart in their choice of major.

The southern flagships are easy admits if you are from CA. For high stats kids that get shut out of UCs, UMD and Pitt are safeties that almost always accept them.
