Did they think kid will not attend and only applied as a back up school?

that is shocking! does he have other acceptances? do you think something could be off in the letters of rec? because this makes no sense.
VT doesn't look at rec letters

Anonymous wrote:Waitlisted. 3.98 UW, 1540 SAT, OOS. Already accepted to a more "competitive" T20 school. Surprised.

Me again as there have been many comments-thanks for support. 14 IB/AP classes, we’re still in shock here.
Varsity athlete, lots of volunteer work, ECs related to personal engineering projects. I will say-think essays were okay-not exceptional. But still aligned with VT values. Only thing truly lacking was real leadership.
In to Pitt (honors and 20K merit a year) in to UTK , in to Alabama. Waiting on UVA, GT and northeastern.

This really is shocking. I hope she will get in later.

I’m sorry. Nova? I hope she gets off the waitlist.

Maybe she’ll still get in. In state or OOS?

You would take WM over VT for engineering? Mkay.

Anonymous wrote:I actually do believe VT wait lists some very high stat kids if they don't apply ED ( Which they stopped ) as a way to yield protect OR give the spot to someone who really wants and needs it. If that it turns out the high stats wait listed kid really does want or need the spot, they will be pulled off the wait-list first.
I only have anecdotal evidence of this, no proof.
I know VT appreciates economic diversity and first generation kids. They are a public U and are here for the to educate the students and benefit the community

I’m so sorry. That is surprising!
Truly surprised by this….perhaps they didn’t think he will accept…
Does VT play the yield protection game?
Nope. This has been discussed ad nauseam in this forum. They state right on their website that they do NOT yield protect. They probably were inundated with other students with equally good or better stats.
Yield Protection
Virginia Tech does not participate in yield protection.

As well as some with worse stats, who got in anyway. Stop acting like the high stats applicant got drowned in a sea of high stats applicants.
Stop pretending you don't have sour grapes. Are you the parent who comes back year after year to moan that your "high stats" kid didn't get in? Please get over it.
No, the point is it’s VT, not MIT. Not everyone who applies, or gets in, is going to have amazing stats. So PP up the thread is gaslighting when they imply that the high stats kid didn’t get in because there were tons of applicants with higher stats. As others have noted, the admissions game is not just about your stats. So don’t tell a high stats kid that he or she didn’t get in because their stats weren’t high enough. In the case shared, the stats weren’t certainly high enough to justify admission. They likely didn’t get in for other reasons.
