When little my aunt who was the cool aunt actually had a 1959 Cadilac Convertible in hot pink. The one with the big huge fins.
I recall once she piled five of us kids in it and took us to Robert Moses Beach with top down (no seatbelts even in car) and on bridge "pinned it" as we requested. Car was at 120mph for most of bridge.
We joke as kids I dont think car is capable of going under 120mph. Here is picture of car.
She actually totaled it. We were not in it. They were putting new sewers in her town and right lane was closed. She was passing on shoulder at around 80mph and the bottom of engine caught hold of a big manhole cover the were putting in that cleared between two front tires. Pulled engine out of car and her car went up on air point up. All the cops came and people were taking pictures with cameras back then. My uncle was not happy.
Final part of story my Uncle was on a business trip for week when happend she had car towed home to driveway totaled then borrowed my uncles 1969 Dodge Dart which at time was newer and ended up totalling car as was so slow she pulled out in front of someone and with six clynder she totaled that too.
She went and got a car from dealer Used on loan with temp plates from dealer. A 1971 Impala Converitble and told dealer in Babylon bill my husband when he gets home.
My Uncle almost had a melt down when he came home to two totaled cars in driveway a third car "he bought" for her.
She was the cool Mom as it had to be very fast, convertible and a loud color or she did not want it.
