This. Not sure why that poster has missed this crucial point. It’s not just about about Harvard. It’s about all science research that is being drastically cut. Not moved to other institutions.
I think it’s because scientists are by nature pretty introverted and not used to the type of PR needed to make Americans aware of what’s going on. Comms is not the strong point.
Not only is comms not the strong point, but science communication can ruin your career. Many scientists don’t take science communication seriously and generally people are asked not to engage in it until they have tenure. It’s seen as a distraction from research, sadly.

The research itself may not be political, but they use the freed up cash to political stuff and become entitled to it. So now they need to lose the entitlement and fund their own research.
Ah so you are fine with the univ of Florida (say) being funded but not Harvard. Even if the UF prof is producing stuff at a lower quality level than the Harvard prof? You would be ok with your tax dollars undergoing some sort of political litmus test before you decide who to award? For the record, the UF professor often has a better proposal than the Harvard prof and is funded. But right now they win on merit and not some weird political scheme.

I know for a fact China offers scholarships to Americans and other foreign nationals to study in their top universities.
As a scientist, I have been approached by China. I reported to my security manager as we have been trained to do. Have you heard of the 1000 talents program? It is entirely about poaching scientists.

It's not their own research. It belongs to the funders. And lots of other institutions do taxpayer-funded research.
The decision was made decades ago to have various academic institutions perform research for the government, rather than building more and more National labs.
As many have mentioned, NSF, NIH, DOD, National labs etc keep tight reins on the research. There is collaboration with the National labs but this is a way to expand and multiply scientific research.
Is that what you would prefer? More government labs? Or just let our leading position go in scientific research?
Science is an engine not an anchor and if we don’t feed it with PhD candidates it will slowly grind to a halt.
What if your contractor/employee has been plotting to go against your very own interest or promoting something you believe is a total BS? Cut the ties of course.
I see. This is where we are. I’m very sad for our country and for friends and family who were hopeful for new cures and treatments for various diseases like cancer. Major setback.
