So, here’s the thing with federal jobs, my dear— feds are not compensated the way those in the private sector are. Their salaries are determined by a set schedule. You don’t get a fat raise just for having a pretty face and a daddy on the board (unless daddy is in Congress, I get it). You have to apply for the promotion. In return, they are offered job security. Same for your local public school teacher or cop. A cop can make questionable choices, even hurt someone, and it would still take a lot to fire them. Do you complain about their protections and job security? How about crappy teachers who are still at your kid’s school 10 years later? Everyone knows Mrs. Larla sucks and should be fired, but alas, she’s still there even with one foot in the grave and refuses to retire. Have a problem with that?

You’re surrounded by people who don’t earn six figures but still have secure jobs.

I have never seen feds cheer on job cuts or benefit cuts in the private sector. Show me that Elon on stage with a chainsaw while a crowd goes wild moment if it happened and I missed it.

I can at least understand if there was maybe jealousy amongst private sector workers vs feds - because hey feds would sometimes look at perks or stock options in the private sector and think “must be nice”! But either could apply for the other job.

What I don’t get is this is not some company - maybe making poor choices and people stop using them and/or they won’t come through it or whatever. This is (all of our) government. Making poor choices for running government, treating our government abusively like trash - do you want your government like that? Do you think this makes America better, or serve us all well? If you run your household with an iron fist, it’s going to come back around. I just don’t get the blanket level of absolute vitriol and hate. Makes no sense (vs. being angry or frustrated about individual instances of actual fraud or the like).

WE TAKE A SUBSTANTIAL PAY CUT FOR JOB STABILITY.

Why is this hard to understand? I made 3x what I am making now when I was in BigLaw, but I hated how associates and counsel were at the mercy of partners. I watched an equity partner try to fire a first year associate less than 6 months into her work because she made a single mistake and was annoying. Literally.

The trade off between the 3x salary and government is stability. Now that is gone.

A lot of federal employees, particularly attorneys, PHDs, engineers, and other highly educated professionals, take a major hit to their pay in exchange for the job security, meaning, and flexibility that a federal job is supposed to provide. That calculus has now changed. It's not worth complaining about at this point, it's just time to move on from a federal role and let the American public deal with their reduced services.

I don't hate them, but they have everything going for them, and some still seem broke and complaining here.
My earned income averages $30k since 1996. Between no raises and wage theft, I still managed to retire years before 50.
Don't complain about money. Concentrate on making it last once you take it home. I doubt the pay is minimum wage.
