I think this is just a FL basher. The CA system doesn't guarantee housing for four years, aside from UCLA. CUNY and SUNY schools have their issues as well with housing. And UF has plenty of quasi-dorm housing right next to campus so nobody is left out with no housing.


Housing is much easier for UF students than at most UCs.

What colleges have adult supervision in their dorms? My kid is in a dorm (not at UF) and there's no adult supervision. As for social programming, what does that even mean? Do you think getting drunk and skipping classes doesn't happen in college dorms?

You wouldn't need that since you'd have a kitchen. You can eat at a dining hall every single day if off campus, just not several times a day every single day. Nobody wants to do that anyway, including the on campus kids who have no kitchen, it gets boring.

Some kids want to be intellectually challenged in and out of class. A well developed residential college system provides that type of programming. It says a lot about you that you can’t grasp any pros to providing on campus housing.




NP- I think you are the one being obtuse. Off campus students are literally right next to campus. They have access to all the same clubs, student union, gyms, games, sports, dining halls, and the off campus residences have programming as well.


Apartment buildings are the same as dorms with RAs, facukty advisors, on site tutoring, and non alcohols based social programming.


Your better argument is to that some kids don’t care about those perks.


Many of the off-campus buildings at UF actually do have RAs. The activities provided by the buildings are NOT alcohol centric at all. They cannot be since many residents are underage and it would be against the law. As for tutors and advisors IN the dorms? I have never heard of this and went to college (a top 20 one) and lived in a dorm.

So? My apartment had a full kitchen and I ate there much more cheaply. Plenty of restaurants surrounding the campus fir lunch... or.. get this... I packed a lunch and ate with fellow students on the grounds in front of the library.

You expect colleges to SUPERVISE your adult children??????

You just really have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to UF. Even when you live off campus... I did and could walk to school... there are clubs, intramural sports, student government. Not to mention all the ranked sports to watch, from swimming and gymnastics to basketball, baseball and football. There are myriad ways to be connected.

It’s not about adult supervision. It’s the sense of community and extra curricular activities. It’s not like the RA’s are telling them when to go to bed or go to class.

My oldest will graduate a year early. She is a liberal arts major and has had a fantastic experience with in-person classes, caring professors, and great internship opportunities. UF is very generous with AP credits, and her entire degree will be comparable to what we would have paid in state.

My youngest is a STEM major and just started. She has very large in-person and online classes, and some of them seemed designed specifically to weed out students. It is definitely a different experience than my older one had, but probably similar to STEM at other state flagships.

In general, UF is a “work hard, play hard” school. Students take their grades seriously, but SEC football and Greek life are huge on the weekends. That said, if your student is more introverted, they will find their people. It just may take a little more work.







Even in the 1970s, weedout courses were a thing at UF. Many of my classmates had a fledgling medical degree snuffed out by organic chemistry.
