Maybe your friends in Arlington are diligently squirreling their money away in 529s, but I assure that ultra high net worth individuals are not using 529s, and there are plenty of ways to "harness the power of compounding" without putting your money into a 529. Lol
I’m late to the party here but just wanted to comment this is a statement that really makes you look dumb. Like really dumb.
I disagree. If you have enough money to have a financial advisor to manage trusts for your kids, why wouldn’t the financial advisor place some of the kid’s money through a 529? Why pay tax when you can pay no tax? Do you like paying taxes when you don’t have to? Sounds like you’re a dumb and poor W-2 wageslave.

Really one of the only worthwhile places to live in this otherwise **** state.
You have to go to the movies, shopping, out to eat sometime. It’s a drag always having to deal with 495 traffic to go to VA and anywhere worthwhile on the weekends. Otherwise the only options are to go to Bethesda, which gets old after a while.
The hyperbole. There’s movie theaters in Bethesda, Rockville, and north Bethesda depending on where in Potomac you are. There’s no shopping you can’t do on the Maryland side. I go into DC way more often than I go into NoVa
All these theaters are dumps compared to the theaters in The Boro, Tysons 2 and Mosaic. I have never seen a crappier, overpriced theater than iPic in Pike and Rose.
Why are nova trolls always like this? It’s almost comical, like you’re are given a script when moving to nova. I don’t think about nova at all when living in moco and life is good
Comparing anything and everything. It’s just a movie theater. They’re all the same. Now most even have reclining seats

It’s not just movie theaters, it’s literally every amenity you can go to that’s nicer.
Loudoun, Fairfax, and Falls Church are three of the Top 10 richest counties in the country based on per capita income. More per capita income brings nicer, and more amenities and usually means less crime and a higher quality of life. This isn’t an edgy opinion. It’s just how things go.

I’m in Rockville and my 529s are fully funded for private colleges. I don’t care about the UMD situation: that is a middle class concern
But you live in Rockville and are a saver, a saver via a government program no less. Can you say you are totally middle class without saying you are middle class?
Not PP, but there's nothing more upper class than exploiting every tax law to minimize your tax liability.
The Maryland 529 only allows you to deduct $2500 per year from state tax. Thats nothing. The attractive part about 529s is tax free growth. You dump $50k when the child is born, set it to the equivalent SP500 fund, and don’t look at it for 18 years. Generally for upper class families, that’s a gift from the grandparents upon birth. God I have to explain everything to you people
Truly wealthy people are not mucking about in 529s. They either have the funds needed in trust or pay from current earnings. Why would you lock your money into a purpose-built and limited application fund if you don't need to?
I’m the PP and while I’m well off, I’m not “truly wealthy” like Musk or whatever. But I can assure you UHNW people do use 529s. It’s a no brainer to harness the power of compounding

OMG, you are so right! Nothing is more prestigious than a ranch house in Pimmit Hills or a McMansion in McLean!
There’s a reason the most prestigious schools and country clubs are in MD and not VA.
