Instead he's letting DOGE run wild bragging about "cutting" money that has already been spent, getting the amounts completely wrong (8 billion vs 8 million) and making actual cuts that will cost more than they save (IRS, for example).

They didn't lean so far left. Their leadership is generally left of center, normal liberals, and not progressives.
