Maybe if so many parents would stop subsidizing adult life young adults would have more realistic expectations. How many of us who lived with roommates had to because our parents weren’t paying the difference so that we could live solo. So many people post here with “reasons” they have to help their young adults but they’re really excuses, not reasons.

People absolutely do feel entitled my younger sibling makes like 30k a year and acts as if family should help her live a lifestyle that requires 60k minimum. She also has the ability to earn more and (and used to) but went into a low paying creative field because she couldn’t handle a normal office job

Exactly. "Roommate" in my situation (my 20's, in college plus working 30+ hours a week) meant subsidizing someone else's phone bill(this was the 90's, when long distance calls were expensive) excessive electric/water use, food, household items like furniture and dishes, etc.
Sorry, but I'd rather save money and live on my own.

People are more mean these days.

I’d rather scrimp on something else.

This seems so selfish and a waste of resources. Typical rich aholes

Well, it’s clear why these people live alone. No one wants to live with them.

What's your net worth? If it's over $5k, why? This seems so selfish and a waste of resources. Typical rich aholes.

You continue to prove my point.

I don't care what commies think of me.

Are you 90? No one thinks or cares about "commies."

Except for a large portion of most government who see the Chinese Communist Party as a major threat to world stability and peace. You might want to read a little before you dismiss communism.

Why are you paying for your kid's housing. He can work and go to school.

Funny how this thread is all about living within your own means and not expecting your parents to subsidize your lifestyle yet the other thread about people being subsidized by their parents is declaring it as the right thing to do.

OMG, I totally agree with you. I am in my 40s. In my 20s, living in DC, working on Capitol Hill, I lived with roommates (at least 2, sometimes more) AND had a second job in the restaurant industry until I got married at 28. The 20 somethings in my office have wild expectations about what life should be like - living on their own in the city and eating expensive lunches everyday (I still bring my lunch and I make close to 7 figures). Certainly none of them have second jobs. They are all super smart and capable, but are missing this go-getter/saving mentality that was so much of who I was twenty years ago.
