Prestige is relative and subjective, so there's that. My subjective list would be something like (and thinking about undergraduate only):

Harvard
MIT
Stanford
Yale
Princeton
Caltech
Columbia (although it is leaking air)

Coming from a different dimension I would add West Point and Annapolis. That gets me to 9 and I'll stop there.

It seems like HYPSM should be secure and not needing to dunk on anyone else. My experience is they don’t IRL.

Top non-Ivy schools trying to legitimize and bump up status so agenda is to dunk on non-HYP ivies.

Berkeley, UofM, UCLA, UVA, UNC want to overcome public label and be legitimized.

The amount of Emory, WashU, Wake level schools that are so insecure for no reason. They are great schools, I hate reading threads tearing each other down to be the best of that range.

And I’m sure a million more examples.
My sense it is the very top and then the schools outside of T75 that are quite content and secure with their positions, and the rest just come off so desperate.

21,24,...46?! Is not the same level. Get over it.

You again?

From South America, we only knew of Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Duke, Caltech, Berkeley, UCLA, and University of Texas

No one? Ever heard the "We Are . . . Penn State" chant at football games? Everyone everywhere else says Penn State.

Isn’t it you that’s not over it? There are nearly 4000 colleges and universities and Wake was in same range before they changed methodology, nothing about that school changed overnight. So, yes, they are at the same level and it’s still to cut down one over another. They are all excellent institutions.

Sounds like a blue collar neighborhood.

Yeah strange

I grew up in nova. I know a lot of Penn state alum. They all say “Penn State”. Everyone knows University of Pennsylvania is an Ivy and known as “Penn”

Some users of this forum think they need to boast about their school for their diploma to be of adequate value. They approach education like it’s some sort of credibility Ponzi scheme. In my experience, they are usually the ones who have accomplished the least and hence are the most insecure. My advice is to ignore their drivel and focus on the 3-5% of posts with actual information that will help you navigate your child to a college whose fit will maximize engagement.

That’s because they can’t get into an Ivy or another top school.

No one in their right mind would pick Penn State over a T10 school unless it is for financial reasons.

There are lots of people who think Penn and Penn State are the same school. I'm guessing maybe that poster ? LOL

Anyone confusing Penn for anything else is an unsophisticated imbecile.

It is Ivies +

The rest is irrelevant. Sure there are great schools in the “rest” category. But when the word os PRESTIGE, it is very simple as it has always been and as it will always be, no matter how many alums or moms around here want to scream UVA, DUKE, VANDY, NORTHWESTERN, CHICAGO….BLABLABLABLABLA

Yes, & if your girlfriend isn’t a supermodel who is also a neurosurgeon, you should refuse to be seen in public with her.

True.
But PP is correct. All it matters for Prestige is IVY +. Let’s stop the madness….

And whoever said nobody knows what Duke is, is 100% correct. My husband is a Duke undergrad and Cornell MBA. We lived in Europe for 15 years. Guess which school people that we worked with knew about? It wasn’t Duke….
