All of you arguing that this is about religious freedom and not homophobia are strange. If a school taught a book where the main character eats pork, it would not be offensive to muslim or kosher students because they themselves aren't eating pork. Religious freedom is about what you do, not what the people around you do.

Do they just want to pretend an entire group of people don't exist?

No child in the US today will escape the knowledge that the LGBTQ+ community exists. It doesn’t need to be taught in schools.

I agree, but I think schools need to stick to the basic subjects of math, science, etc. Stop teaching sexuality or promoting other doctrines many do not agree with. Our public schools are failing in the basics. The parents can teach their kids about sexuality IMO.

Students graduating from these woke schools can’t read, write, or do basic math at the appropriate grade level. But they sure can recite the LGBTQ and DEI propaganda that is fed to them by liberal educators. These schools have the wrong priorities, and they are not properly preparing students for college or a job.

I also wish school would focus more on core academics and less on social issues. Nationally, only 26% of 8th graders are proficient in grade-level math, and only 31% are proficient in grade level reading. That is sad

Very sad. It’s the dumbing down of standards by liberal educators. Our education system is woefully failing.

Read Maryland’s instruction guidelines for this program. Perfect example of indoctrination and why SCOTUS will implement the opt out.

Enough with the “we just want to exist” blather. Everyone knows gay people exist and an opt out policy is not banning books. Such tired and easily falsified arguments.

I’m not gay. I’m your average GenX mom of teenagers. I do think MAGA wants to erase people who don’t fit their ideal. White, Christian, heterosexual, Trump-loving, working to middle class or billionaire. You refuse to acknowledge there are other people in this world who want to read about their history/experience in literature. MAGA cannot handle a reality different than their own.

Many of the parents opposed to this curriculum are Muslim and/or African. Yet you single out only white Christians and MAGA supporters when a whole host of parents from different backgrounds don’t want your liberal propaganda taught to their children in school.

No one said you were gay?

It’s impossible to discuss this issue with you because you keep pretending it’s about teaching the “existence” of gay people. Again. Read the Maryland instructions for teacher lessons about the books in question. It goes well beyond that. Parents want an opt out.

Why are you so insistent that parents not have that option for their children? The children do not belong to the Maryland government and it’s a parent’s decision when to introduce this material to their five year olds.

Gen Z now reports and insane rate of LGBTQ compared to other generations. It's clear they're brainwashing kids and are confusing them due to indoctrination at such a young age. It is mass hysteria and a trendy fad to be an alphabet soup for your sexual identity. Why should schools be forced to teach this indoctrination? Parents can choose to let their kids have reading hour with Village People at home or outside school.

+1.

What exactly is an LBGTQ book?

One that casually mentions teacher Ms. Smith has a wife? Fine whatever.

One that teaches 7 years they can choose to be a boy or girl or neither? No way I am keeping my kid in that school.

Agree. My young elementary child was read Being You: A first conversation about gender by the teacher, to the whole class- with no mention of it to the parents. It basically tells children they can pick their gender, be both, or neither or chance anytime, and then goes into talking about patriarchy. WTF. Seriously, this is totally inappropriate

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_T-eGrBpxAc

I am a Democrat and agree I would not want my kid being taught that you can change your gender in school at any age since kids are impressionable and teens especially are trying to figure out who they are and normally try on many different "identities." I believe in kindness and respect and do not want any person discriminated against or bullied so I do think it is ok to teach kindness and respect but not this.

The whole asking for your pronoun thing has to go as well since again it is placing ideas in kid's heads. Now if someone tells me they are specific pronouns of course I will try to honor them but don't bash me if I accidentally call them what they appear as. In regards to bathrooms I am not worried unless someone who looks like a burly man tries to use the ladies restroom. Locker rooms should always have private dressing and shower stalls since locker rooms historically have been areas were kids were bullied. Trans people should not be on competitive sports teams of the opposite sex. And again I believe in kindness but also fairness. And we need to knock it off by saying "assigned at birth" or "cis-gender" or "pregnant people" and other similar stuff. This is not going to win folks over to Democratic side. Teach kindness instead.

I also worry that transgender medicine is misguided as a health care professional since no one can change their gender. They can only offer cosmetic surgery and hormones which can cause severe side effects and be damaging to sexual health. I worry that many of these kids will end up changing their minds and have permanent unwanted changes to their bodies. I think a better option would be to assist these people to be happy with the body they have and allow self expression within reason (we cannot have people going around naked for example). This is not the same as praying away the gay but is being realistic that we cannot change our sex and trying to do no harm which I think transgender medicine does.

In the 1980's we had Prince who expressed his feminine side and masculine side very well and we loved it. Men and women should be able to butch or feminine or both.

Yes! I’m the PP whose child was read the above book and I agree with everything you said. But the problem is…at least at our school/district, speaking out at all is shot down with calling people bigots, racists, and are silenced. A parent that spoke out about this book, when later applied to join the school board, was denied because of “different values”

Yes, it's very difficult to speak up against progressive priorities like trans indoctrication in elementary school. It's a quick way to be ostracized in more liberal communities. I think it's a big reason why more and more liberal parents are quietly voting for Republicans. There's no room for dissent or conversation in progressive school districts.

I think there is more room for dissent in Democratic circles than Republican circles. Look at Trump cancelling anyone who disagrees with him and he has a hit list for anyone who crosses him. And Republicans have a long history of canceling folks. Remember the Dixie Chicks and other who were cancelled for speaking out? OTOH I think Democrats will step up to the plate and allow a big tent on this but it may take some time since some are confusing being again trans ideology with being against gay people. I still think they are a minority of Democrats.

You are comparing something that happened 22 years ago versus the vitriol that is happening right now to parents, normal people who just want to raise their children.

Yeah lady, there's a big difference between teaching the history of the gay community and their fight for equal rights in this country as a history lesson later on in high school and...introducing the most cutting edge sex identities generated by the internet to elementary schoolers. You're hopeless.

If there was indoctrination in public schools, these folks would not exist. They were not indoctrinated but they were persecuted.

MAGA just wants to persecute people! Just be honest. You want these other groups not to exist.

Opting out isn’t persecution. Good Lord.

Ok then no acknowledgement of religion in schools. My kids deserve better than being polluted with the delusions of Christians.

Prayer in school was banned decades ago. You aren’t allowed to teach about the virtues of one religion over another. This is the exact argument the plaintiffs in this case have, so you sound like you support the opt out after all.
