School should end 10-20 minutes earlier in Spring in low snow years. 990hrs and no more

Ice is not a reason to delay, unless you’re talking about a uniform sheen of ice that falls overnight. Literally every other institution in our area will open like normal tomorrow. Buses headed for schools are not inherently more vulnerable to ice.

Fairfax just announced closed. APS will follow. Pre COVID APS used to regularly go back earlier than Fairfax but they haven’t diverged once since covid.

Should definitely be at least a delay. Way too icy.

Exactly- need to either prep kids for school or make arrangements for childcare.

It’s a really tough call depending how risk averse you are. Our tiny side street has steep hills both ways and hasn’t been plowed today. But literally one street over is completely clear. We are walkers so not worried about getting our car out before school opens up.

They always call night before now.

I think most main sidewalks will be fine, it would be ridiculous to shut down until there is enough sun to eliminate every patch of ice from every curb in the county. People need to buy some winter boots and figure out how to exist like all the other people who live where it snows. I can understand a delay if the buses aren’t able to start bright and early, but the people making the call probably want a day off and aren’t inclined to open things.

This. Following the logic of people on this site school can’t reopen until it’s warm enough to melt ice off all sidewalks. That’s going to be a while.

2 hour delay. Third snow day is unnecessary. Took my kids to library, sledding and lunch. All fine.

I estimate that 50% of sidewalks and curbs were covered in snow and ice. Most streets were plowed but some tiny side streets were not. The 25 degree temps tonight are going to make it very hard to open up tomorrow morning. Those early start schools start at like 7:30!

I look forward to the temper tantrum that "hold them accountable" guy will have tomorrow!

Our street has school buses on it and still has no plowing or treatment. Last area on the list apparently.

My street still hasn’t been plowed. I bet they cancel Wednesday too.

Back in 2022 we had the same amount of snow and they closed for a week

That was because they couldn’t get teachers to show up post covid. They were barely able to get enough teachers to show up with no snow. I remember that Friday they said they were opening and then had to rescind and close due to staffing issues.

Okay? Many teachers live in Fairfax. It’s a mess over there.

Yet so many other workers are managing to get to their jobs TODAY!!!

they probably don't take a school bus to school.

Seriously? Do you know how many of my kids' parents took a public bus to get to work today? Their kids can get to school and so can the teachers.

Public buses run on main roads. School buses go all over on neighborhood streets. Big difference.

The County prioritizes school bus routes and they are nearly all cleared as of late this morning. Keep all your fingers and toes crossed it works out though and you can stay in your PJs another day.

We'll see. There's also the issue of sidewalks and bus stops being clear so kids can walk safely to schools and stops without walking or standing in the road. I don't think there's any way APS opens on time tomorrow. Maybe a 2 hour delay.

I think there will be significant ice tomorrow, the sun is melting a lot but not enough for evaporation in my neighborhood.
