That’s great to hear! Those are all solid schools.

Right and sadly PP’s kid won’t go to any of them, but there were classmates of the kid who were rejected from each of these schools because PP’s kid was one of the 18-20 kids that school accepted. And now some senior is sad because they didn’t get into their reach school due to PPs kid collecting acceptances like trophies that will go on a shelf.

Sorry but if people stopped doing this and actually exercised some discernment in applying to only 2-3 safeties, it would really help other kids in this process.

For High stats kids, sometimes they are rejected from Targets and Safeties because "the school is yield controlling". So as long as that is happening, those kids will continue to apply to 4-5+ safeties. Despite the fact those safeties are your kid's target or reach. In reality, the school has already factored not attending into the picture. they know their normal yield and which candidates are using them as a safety. However, they are hoping to snag some top candidates at a W&M for the instate rates vs 90K+.

Please explain how this is a safety.
Stats?
My DC has great stats and we are on pins and needles waiting in ED. I ready g why yiur DC views this as a “safety” might help me relax a little.

W&M is NOT a safety for anyone. Acceptance rate is 33.5%. That makes it at most a target for a top student

Someone high stats, has a better chance but it is still not a Safety for them.

For some private high schools, there have never been rejections above certain GPAs and SAT scores to UVA, W&M, UMD, and other competitive (non-California) public schools if you look at historical scattergrams.

THIS. At our DC private, W&M has NEVER rejected a kid over a certain GPA and UVA is similar (with a different GPA). There are pretty much lines in the sand. You can look at the data and it doesn't lie. Sure, your kid could be the first kid in 10 years to not get in with XX GPA (which is why you have more than one safety) but it's a pretty sure thing.

Same here. W&M has never rejected anyone above a certain GPA, thus the college counselors suggest it as a safety for high stats kids. School had a bad year with UVA admissions a few years back, so that one is never a safety, but generally both W&M and VT (except engineering) are suggested as safeties for high stats kids.

VT is a safety for anyone with mid stats at mine. Engineering and CS I suspect has higher bar but VT's line is closer to JMU's. Also, VT seems to not GAF about SAT.

Huh. Absolutely none of the above holds true for our high school.

Why so many?
My kid has 3 safeties. 5 targets. and 12 reaches.

Not to send the thread in an off-topic direction but I like this ratio. I get so confused when I hear people say you should have more than three safeties. Logically, these are the schools you are most likely to get into so why would you waste limited CommonApp slots on sure things?

To compare merit aid. Mine is in at two likelies so far, and there is a 10K difference between them in merit aid. 12 reaches is a ridiculous waste of money.

not at all. We are full pay. At have a small but decent shot. It worked for older kid.

DP. Are you the same person who keeps repeating this? It absolutely is a safety for
plenty of kids who don’t actually plan to go there because they have much better options.

+1
Of course W&M is a safety to certain students.

For who? For everyone? I can see W&M is definitely a reach for you with your critical thinking ability.

General guidelines: you don't call it a likely unless they accept at least 60%.

Acceptance rates are generally unreliable proxies for selectivity. Look at Northeastern.

Your stats are above the 75th percentile, you're in the green on your school's scattergram, and they accept at least 60% of all applicants.

That’s not how this works. The schools estimate how many offers to make and how many are likely to accept to fill their classes. Admitted students who don’t ultimately enroll somewhere haven’t taken someone else’s spot. That is such a false narrative and sour grapes attitude.
