Most people don't put out signs? That's a terrible barometer.
The real reason is that the Democrats and left-leaning supporters were in a news media bubble which kept feeding rosy views of the outcome, despite ignoring the terrible approval polls of the current administration. You don't have to support Trump to understand how underwhelmed people are going to be when you offer them more of the same, and they already feel like the same isn't working.
This loss belongs entirely to the establishment Dems just as it did in 2016 when they nominated and ran a highly unpopular candidate against the will of the voters, thereby alienating the entire base of support they claim to have (working class voters of any ethnicity). Bernie Sanders was 100% correct - they've lost the plot.

People are so pissed off about inflation. Meanwhile, Democrats spend inordinate amounts of times about trans in women's sports. They also impose things like sanctuary cities and have open borders that are allowing mass illegal immigration in. People are sick and tired of alllll of the BS DEI 'training' at work that is doing nothing more than supporting an asinine cottage industry to tell other people they're oppressors or are oppressed. And democrats are ruining schools by the day. They are removing all standards for education and discipline out of a completely misguided attempt at 'equity'.
Locally, Democrats' insistence on allowing in mas illegal immigration has real consequences. Taxes have gone up because schools are now trained....
School facilities and budgets get passed onto local tax payers. There is stuff like renovation queues, bond amount limits, etc.
Fairfax County through FCPS converted an office building rapidly to make Bailey's Upper School. Entire new elementary school sites have been constructed . Major increase in ESL Hispanic FARMS from 2003-04 to the school year 2023-24:
Kindergarten =27 to >1700.
Grades 9-12=1458 to 5725. If prior ESL was in the last SY it was 6623.
Major push now to provide at least 1 year of preK - maybe extended full day. So that means maajor tax increase to pay for it plus costs to reallocate existing capacity.

Did you leave your house in the past 3 months? I'm in true blue Fairfax and definitely saw Trump signs. In fact, I saw more this time than in 2016 or 2020.
Agreed, I’m in Fairfax and actually saw a surprising amount of Trump signs and support. More than I remember from his previous elections.
