+1. It' about rigor and top placement in their own high school class. And, yes, it takes 30 seconds for the UVA readers to rank your kid even if your high school "doesn't rank"

I know many who have gotten in in-state with AB AP Calculus. That's silly.

We are oos, but our counselors never have said ANYTHING about taking 4 years of a foreign language in HIGH SCHOOL. They said to take a minimum of 3, and that 3 is fine. They said take 4 years if you are looking at the elite colleges, but they also said this knowing it is very very common to take 1 or even 2 years in middle school. This is literally the first time in my life (3 kids) I have ever heard that college want you to take 4 years in high school. Sheesh, thought he was good stopping at Spanish 4 so he could take 6 APs and track class senior year.

I think this is true. My friend and her husband both attended UVA and are donors - not huge, but they have a sizable net worth, prob 10mm and regularly donate amount between 1k-10k. They have their child a preread about 10 years ago and even then the admissions person said admission would be unlikely due to a few things: they took AP AB senior year, not BC, while at a Bethesda public, stopped at the fourth year of a language but did not have four years of language in HS and instead took two sciences senior year. All seams absurd to me but that was their experience. He EDed and got into Tufts instead.

Right, but apparently OP’s daughter went to TJ but didn’t take APs in bio, chem, or physics, which I would tho k wouldn’t look great compared to other TJ applicants when UVA wants to see highest rigor in science - I would think *especially* from a stem school like TJ.

No you should not skip UVA. Your kid’s counselor can explain his/her math path in the recommendation.

She should absolutely apply, and if it’s her first choice ED makes sense. You hear early and if accepted then the college application madness is over.

Its possible for kids to read and write without taking AP Lang and Lit. However if your fellow applicants are taking and you decide not to, it certainly puts you at a disadvantage.

It's really hard to offer opinions for schools that operate differently from most. In my non-VA opinion, it's a little unusual for a student taking calc in junior year to take no math senior year, unless no more math was offered at the high school. If no multivariable, then I would have suggested AP stats. (At most high schools, it's not that hard to add in an additional history if that is the student's interest, and that is not typically done at the expense of math.) That said, we don't know your high school. If this is commonly done, then I would not worry about it for any college, including UVA. It would make sense if OOS applicants are reviewed differently than in-state.
