Hi! We are evaluating WES here for our rising kindergartener and toddler.

The school said they aim for two classes of 18, but their third grade (or one of the upper elementary grades) has only one class.

Anyone know why this is? Are a lot of kids starting and leaving WES?

It’s very class dependent. There have been graduating classes of 30. But generally middle school is smaller. Their target size in elementary is larger than 36.

It is incorrect that their elementary target is 36. They have historically been a two homeroom elementary school, with each homeroom having between 13 and 15 kids, so target size is 26-30. During Covid, in order to have less individuals in each room, they expanded many grades to three homerooms, each a bit smaller, and as such they were overall able to accommodate more students per grade. The school’s mission, though, is to return to having only two homerooms per elementary grade.

As is the case with most private schools due to their smaller size, grades are very cohort dependent, and some grades are more cohesive than others. A lot will depend on your individual kid. We have been very happy with our current middle schooler’s experience.

Thank you - excellent thread!

A PP mentions that is gets smaller as you progress through the school, but that isn’t the case. The grade size grows, and I believe the three largest grades are the three middle school ones.

The middle school experience had been exceptional for our family, although we were very pleased with elementary, too.

+1. I believe every grade from 4 to 8 this year is 36 or more.

Small school. Gets smaller as you age up. Lot of pros, but if the class mix doesn’t work for your kid or their good friend leaves… good luck.

"We found the classes too small at WES; we had a serious girl bullying problem and chose to leave because admin. and teachers wouldn't do anything about it. Once that starts on a grade in a small school, it's difficult for girls to find a safe place."

When considering a school with small class sizes, ask how many boys and girls are in the current grade. You can find that it can be very lopsided because once a girl or 2 leave, others start to leave the class too. Doesn’t have to be a specific reason either. And then it’s hard to balance the class out.

WES is a great place for a family who is looking for a small school focused on a well rounded experience. MCPS magnets have a completely different goal so not sure you are going to find a lot families who were deciding between two very different types of environments.
