A lot of the international swimmers who train in the US do so because US universities will offer them full ride scholarships to attend. Yes they can also get a free college education in their home country but depending on their longterm goals a degree from an American university (which would usually cost a high premium for an international student) could be a huge advantage.

Occasionally someone chooses to come train with a specific coach in the US because they think the training will be superior to what they'd get where they are (like marchand coming to train with bowman) but sometimes it's just that they are being offered something of high value and it's a chance to live in the US for several years. It's not that you can't become a very successful swimmer in these other countries. And yes there are plenty of people winning medals at this Olympics who don't train in the US!

Thomas Ceccon won a gold medal in the 100 back. He's an Italian who trains in Italy. Sarah Sjostrom from Sweden won gold in 100 free. She does not train in the US

Case in point. Leon Marchand (France) has been training with Bob Bowman ( Phelps’ coach) at Arizona State. Marchand has won 3 golds.


Exhibit B: Canadian phenom Summer McIntosh, who trains in Florida.

The rest of the world is catching up (or is already caught up) with the US, and is getting faster and better. That’s a good thing IMO. More fuel for the competition in 2028 on home turf. Gone are the days when we had Michael Phelps to rack up several individual golds and boost our medal count… the game has changed and it’s time for the US (particularly the men) to rise to the challenge.

I actually feel like the US just looks unbelievably dominant at these Olympics despite some specific instances where US athletes have been disappointed with outcomes. It makes you realize just how much of a financial and cultural hegemony the US is. We used to at least suck at soccer but then the US women got really good at it so you can't even say that anymore.


Don't worry, the US men like to remind Americans that we suck at soccer. It's U23, so we may have a chance, but the full USMNT will disappoint soon enough

I think something broke your brain. The US womens' gymnastics team is unquestionably the best in the world with 2 olympic all-around champions who are still somehow at the top of their game 4 and 8 years later. Simone Biles is considered by everyone who matters both inside the sport and out to be the greatest womens gymnast of all time. She has pushed the sport to levels I don't think people previously though possible and the fact that she is still able to compete at this level so far above even the best gymnasts from every other country at 27 is just unheard of. She has Phelps level dominance in the sport.

Put Simone next to any prior gymnastics great and she would absolutely dominate them. She does things no one has ever done before and she does them with perfect execution and power and even is artistically strong. If you don't understand that then you don't understand the sport at all.


These every four year gymnastics watchers with their absolutely idiotic opinions deserve to be ignored. They are literally so stupid its not worth the effort.
