Scottie didn't throw a chair off a roof onto a busy sidewalk. He was in a well-marked PGA car that was obviously heading into the tournament. He had no way of knowing there was a major accident. It sounds more like the police were a bunch of Keystone Kops on a power trip and it was all a misunderstanding. And Scheffler is known to be one of the nicest players in the PGA. He's already issued a very thoughtful statement explaining the incident. And what kind of police procedure involves 'attaching" oneself to a moving vehicle anyway?

I am generally pro-police. I think it can be a really difficult job. But good lord they do hire some idiots.

Nobody gives a damn what sport you play, you do not get to drive thru an active crime scene investigation of a fatality, no less. And when police tell you to stop, you need to comply.

Exactly.

It wasn't an "active crime scene" morons. This was the bottle neck a mile or so away.

“Free Scottie!!!!”

You want to be mad about this but it was all a big nothing.

It reminds me of all the experiences I had working in the legal system where middle and upper middle class white people argued endlessly to me - sometimes until I had to hang up the phone on them or close the door in their faces - about why the law shouldn’t apply to them or their precious snowflake child.

These same people would bray and bark if I didn’t enforce the law with all due haste and harshness on those poor white trash and brown people who were mucking up the neighborhood.

It’s the same old story, as old as our legal system.

How many of the people posting here in defense of this rich white golfer who injured a law enforcement officer have argued strenuously that all those black motorists the cops ended up shooting should have just done what they were told?

Sickening racism/classism going on in these comments.

By the way, I’m not a cop lover - especially not after having worked with them for years. Some are good, many not so much. Most of them would be the first to call me or come to my office looking for a pass for their kid’s drunken driving or whatever. My comment is not about cops, it’s about the rule of law - which so many Americans feel shouldn’t apply to them.

+1. Bunch of classist racists and pathetic jock sniffers.

“White trash?” You’re a gem.

He was just direction traffic. The fatality was in a different area.

It was a mile away from where this happened. These cops should have been doing their jobs and letting the golfers get to the event that they were there to direct traffic for.

Probably not if he was a professional golfer on his way to work. This is a police force with a history of lying in official reports (those lies got a woman killed), and it’s appropriate to closely evaluate a nonsensical report that resulted in felony charges yet provided more detail about the officer’s pants than the alleged crime. We should all care about police overreach regardless of the defendant’s race or wealth.

That road was full of people on their way to work, why is a dumb jock golfer more important than everyone else stuck there?

Can you tell us where the golfer resisted arrest? This cop clearly needs more training about how to manage traffic, maybe he should go back to desk duty for awhile.

I’m sorry, but you are either a moron or pretending to be one.

I am a fat middle aged white woman, highly educated and a former prosecutor AND former defense attorney.

If I drove through a traffic barricade and continued on my way despite a cop practically adhered to my vehicle, knocking on the vehicle and yelling at me to stop, my fat ass would be in jail - especially if that cop was knocked down and injured by my colossal stupidity/arrogance.

Do you have any idea how many cops get killed on traffic details in this country every year?

The only idiot in this scenario was the arrogant rich white golfer. I hope the prosecutor is not bullied into dropping the charges, because this manchild should pay the same price my fat ass would have to pay if I acted an idiot like he did.

Did you miss the part about how the golfer was in a marked PGA vehicle? Other players have stated that they were told they could proceed to the venue and in fact, did exactly what Scheffler did to get around traffic? Also where was the cop adhered to the vehicle? How did that happen? Why aren't those facts in the police report?

Rules, traffic laws & law enforcement officer commands don’t apply to me because I have an event sticker on my Cadillac Escalade rental.

Do you realize how ridiculous you sound?

This is such a lazy, knee-jerk, know-nothing interpretation of the situation.

No, it’s really not. If you’re in traffic for whatever reason one day and you see some Cadillac Escalade behind you use the median to pass everyone, what’s the first thing we all think? I wish a cop would see him. And if you drive up the road and see that same luxury SUV pulled over by a cop you will laugh your ass off and hope the prick gets multiple tickets.

He wasn't using the median.

He very well was. Several witnesses confirmed. Cops changed the story on the arrest record.

So you are saying he deserved to be arrested for driving on the median even though the cops lied about where he was?

It’s 8pm EST on a Saturday night, why are you running point trying to spin for some country club trust fund brat golfer who couldn’t give a f*** about you? So sad.

Because they’re irrelevant? You don’t get to drag a traffic cop because you have a marked car. I get maybe it was an accident, but as the driver you’re responsible for knowing if a cop is “adhered” to your vehicle.

By the way, a “marked car” at these golf events is literally just a small magnet on whatever sponsor automaker cars pulled from local new car dealerships. There might be nearly 1,000 “marked cars” for a PGA major rolling in and out of an event. Doesn’t mean you’re the freaking Pope and time stops for you.

“Officer, are you aware I’m driving an OFFICIAL loaner vehicle with the event magnet on a door panel? That pretty much gives me a pass to do anything I want.”
