My DD who is a junior loves Stanford - what kind of gpa, APs and test scores did he have to get in REA for CS? It seems very difficult even for the most amazing students ?

Honestly we were stunned too. He has a 4.0/1600, not many APs, but private, very academic day school that goes beyond AP curriculum (not in DMV area). He was very passionate about his project to improve urban amenities which had a CS component and wrote about that in his essays. I’m guessing that passion came through and his teacher recommendations corroborated that. But we’re only guessing. Once he matriculates, I believe he can read his file to see what exactly moved the needle. We’re definitely curious!

You have a crazy view that the only criterion that matters is the size of the city a college is in. Maybe Columbia & Dartmouth both have kickass Balkan history professors, or both have great fencing teams. Or they both have special dorm rooms for people who are allergic to some chemical. Maybe the applicant has a grandparent near both schools.

These are all hypothetical, but the point is there are a range of criteria, & not everybody prioritizes them the same.

Burt Reynolds was married to skinny Judy Carne & buxom Loni Anderson. Under your view, maybe he was crazy because the only thing that matters to you is bust size. But maybe he liked them both because they were funny. Or smart. Or smelled good. Everybody has different priorities.

People like different things about different schools. My child applied to one school that has just a few hundred students and one with 20k. There are pros and cons to each of the schools on her list.

And some people just apply to all the Ivies to apply to all the ivies. A girl at my hs did this and got nos from all. She wound up at UNC-she was an oos legacy.
