At least she chased those endorsements. So much more than Chen. I'm voting for her. She can learn on the job too.
Chased those endorsements. Bwa ha ha. They recruited her to run as the Latinx candidate to replace CDT.
You say this like you’re an insider and witnessed the Hispanic community recruiting and preparing her for office like a puppet. Maybe she had these goals in advance and started to make relationships herself like Chen is purporting to do.
Anyway, anonymous, you’re just stirring up stuff and I can see it clearly from where I sit. I like Zuraya probably as little as I like Chen, but #2 is going to her.
Not an insider. Paying attention. She had no prior connection to APS, joined a committee this year, but had big names like Lopez and Tejada line up from get go. She’s the next CDT who was the next TT.
She has just enough connection and Chen. Has kids going to APS. At least she went one more step than him and joined an advisory committee.
Ok so Zuraya was one step ahead of him but she's been to what like 3 meetings? Honestly I just think she was better groomed. Someone probably told her to hurry up and join a committee so she can show her involvement. She must have referred to it 5 times in the time I saw her speak. She's not fooling anyone. Neither Zuraya or Chen have any involvement as far as I'm concerned.
And Larry, oh Larry... still trying to figure him out.
Larry is not a great public speaker so he gets drowned out. BUT he's been on these:
- Former President of the CCPTAs
- Chair of the Science Advisory Committee
- Co-Chair of the Advisory Council on Instruction
(took these from earlier in the thread)
I am a shameless Larry fan. He's a sweet guy and teacher and he really cares but he has no campaign manager.
Larry's not going to win. It's between Chen and Zuraya, and she's going to win #2 just because of all of the people backing her.
We should have had better candidates, but here we are. Some of you anonymous experts should have run.![]()
Larry has my vote regardless. I don't believe in defeatism and in a ranked election I truly believe if people voted for who they think are qualified instead of who they think is going to win, he'd be one of those going up.
His 2 kids are k-12 APS grads, he's a teacher, he has all that experience on CCPTAs. You all say you want a qualified candidate but when one walks up, you will never vote for them if they're a bad at being a politician. And we wonder why our schools are in the state they are in now.
I'm not voting for him because his experience is a decade too late. And if he's so tired at candidate forums, OMG what will he do at school board meetings that regularly runs until midnight! Oh, and he's for SROs, which is a no-go for me.
You sound like my MAGA neighbor talking about Sleepy Joe.
What part of "being pro-SROs is a no-go" makes me MAGA though?
He's just like that retired teacher who ran a few cycles ago. Sandy I don't remember her last name? She should have won just by being a teacher, but didn't have the presence to get through a candidate forum. Being prepared and answering questions fully and coherently counts for a lot.
Didn’t she end up having some bad positions at some point after the election?

Anonymous wrote:ArlNow had a story this morning about Arlington Campaign donations and endorsements. I got curious and went to VPAP. Chen apparently has only raised money from 4 individuals and took out a $10K loan for his campaign. Zuraya right now is funded almost exclusively by other Hispanic people. Kathleen is the only one that has raised money from a diverse group of people of names I mostly recognize. And of course, I can't find Larry's financial disclosures.

That really turns me off. Parents work hard on these committees for years.
You better have a source on that because if you're lying... oh well, you're still anonymous and can make unsubstantiated claims. But I do know someone on the info tech committee and I'm sure others do too!

Anonymous wrote:I went to two forums and spoke with the candidates, and here are my thoughts:
Chen - really smart, really friendly. Obviously learning a lot - the difference between my first and most recent conversation with him is large. I hope if he loses he runs again. He's the kind of thoughtful and approachable that we need for APS.
Kathleen - very nice to talk to, obviously very plugged in especially for special ed. Not as polished as Chen or Zuraya but very genuine. Gave thoughtful answers to my questions.
Larry - nice but awkward to talk to. He's retired and have grown kids so is able to dedicate full time to the Board. I worry though that he won't be able to effectively work with other SB or CB members.
Zuraya - very friendly as well, but I was not as impressed with her answers. My earlier and more recent conversations with her were about the same -- there wasn't the growth that I saw with Chen.
Overall I'm picking Chen and Kathleen because I think they'll be the most accessible and accountable, and had the best answers in the forums.
However everyone that's running is awesome for doing this -- some of us were afraid that no one would run for this hard and thankless job. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. No one is perfect. I wish everyone running the absolute best and hope they continue to be involved in APS.
