I stopped wearing my engagement ring here a while ago because I felt like I was being followed one day on campus, my bikes have been stolen 3 times with locks on them, then years later my cars been broken into 3 times I now drive an old beater no one wants to steal. Lastly I was sexual assaulted in broad daylight. Now I'm finally like F this, I moving. I have given this city plenty of times and years to redeem itself it has not. F this place.

Have pity for them. They need the coats more than you do. These poor people don’t have access to any help.

Yeah, sure! Blame poors for the acts of lawless.
It's not the wealthy committing armed robbery.

Most progressives are critical theorists so they view the poor as oppressed. To them, street crime is justice. That's why this won't be solved as long as leftists are in charge. We need good moderate liberals and conservatives to come in and implement solutions that work in the real world, not just the world of make-believe that progressives live in.

You are wrong. I am a progressive that believes that the poor are clearly oppressed in our society. The flaw in your nasty assumption is that I don’t think these kids are criminals because they are poor. Poor people are not “more criminal” in nature than wealthy people. You are not a serious person and would rather tilt at windmills than discuss these issues reasonably.
You've clearly never been poor. I have and poor people are far more prone to criminal activity than middle and upper class folks. Any crime map or crime statistics will tell you this. As a progressive, you are living in the land of make-believe where "data is white supremacy" so you're not allowed to use it. So you are incapable of solving this issue.

I've been poor, with zero resources, and I didn't go robbing people.

So? There is more wrong with them than being poor. What's your point?
Nobody knows what that more is or how to fix it.

Sure we do. It’s violent urban culture. Specifically the glamorization of the thug lifestyle. Same since the 80’s.

Thug life.

That's a very derogatory term, right?

The quality of life in DC has never been worse. Congress should take over the city and oust Bowser.

This sounds a bit too much like “what is the rationale behind a young woman in her teens and early 20s walking around wearing tight skirts and low-cut tops and heels? Especially after they were told that are at risk of being raped so they should stop wearing them….”

Maaaybe just maaaaaybe the responsibility of not being ROBBED should not be placed onto the VICTIM of the robbery.

Right… because showing off $2000 coats is liberating for these kids and might as well be an extension of their identity. My apologies for suggesting we stifle such a pure form of expression

I’ve never stolen the clothes off someone’s back because I unilaterally determined what price an American should be allowed to spend on them. Let’s have full communism lest people show off

It's not that complicated. Every time there is a recession or income equality gets extreme then conspicuous consumption gets targeted by criminal elements. Robin Hood, Oliver Twist, Gatsby it's all the same. A Canada Goose jacket costs over $1,000. A Moncler jacket is even more expensive. They are easy to sell and sell for a couple hundred. This is about economics and nothing else. Not race, not history, not sociology and not politics.

Those jackets cost over a week's worth of average wages. Flount your wealth like that and you become a mark, just like it has always been.

+100

If that was the case then they would just be stealing any old coat from anyone. But they are ONLY stealing g expensive designer $1000+ coats. A desperate person isn’t that picky. These are criminals not down and out good poor people.

My spouse suggested a 'bollard system'. Apparently they have them all over Europe. They are also useful for shutting down roads for bike races etc. Would be great for a city like DC. He suggested it at an ANC meeting and they said "sounds expensive".
