Hi everyone, my mom has lived in an apartment building in NorthWest DC for almost a decade now. Over the last two years several new people have moved into the building into new rent controlled units that the city decided the apartment complex must have. Recently two families have started having violent confrontations in the lobby together. My mom was walking into the lobby earlier this week when a fight broke out culminating in a woman beaten with a “Please sign in” metal sign and a knife being pulled. My mom was terrified and ran but now I worry that next time it could be a gun. My question is, does she have any legal recourse on recovering her security deposit and moving out given as how this is only the most recent incident in a series of violent incidents? Also there is no security guard only a front desk concierge.
Tldr; mom lives in building with new violent tenants can she get her security deposit back and move?

Too bad the voters didn’t pay more attention during the election. Elections, consequences, etc etc
A recall campaign can be initiated beginning January. People here should walk the walk and sign a petition when the time comes.

The problem is that you can’t put the people placed through Housing First in the cross hairs bc of a huge systemic problem in the government. We are not seeing the forest for the trees.
I don’t understand your second paragraph.
Is there any way to learn which buildings are eligible for voucher residents? My building is fine but I want to know if it could potentially turn to sht like other places in the neighborhood.
All of them are required to take people w/o consideration of how rent is paid. This included condos rented out.
So is it just dumb luck that my building hasn't flipped? It could happen anywhere in the city[/quote
yes, it has. the density and size of buildings on connecticut and wisconsin makes it more obvious, but yes.
This is PP. My building seems like an ideal candidate for this horsesht, so we’ve been lucky so far.
Who’d you vote for in ‘20? The other Ward 3 candidate presciently called for an immediate voucher moratorium. Unfortunately he lost. Just think how much better it would be if we could set the clock back two years. Choose better next time.
Everyone complaining here should ask that person to run again and contribute to his campaign.Who was it?
Everyone voted for Mary Cheh who had been in office for years. This year for the first open field in a long time.

Get them off the ANC and support the 'counter groups'--likely we need to donate.

People, we need candidates! Retirees are great for this - they have plenty of time to give. Talk to your wise neighbors and colleagues, please!!
It was literally the first issue Krukoff listed! Come on people, let’s do better next time.
DC Issues
Public Safety/Support Police and the Rule of Law: Crime is on the rise. We must invest in police and empower them to do their jobs, with empathy, but with the knowledge that we have their back. We need more police officers on the beat. A cost benefit analysis must occur prior to anyone breaking the law, even for a minor offense. Homeless encampments must be appropriately removed. Clean shelters with wrap around services must exist and be utilized for DC homeless residents that qualify.

Look, a Republican, commercial real estate developer, self-described private school "lifer" who moved to MoCo to send his kids to school then came back after they went to college to run for office as a Republican, is not going to get elected here no matter how much he talks about crime.
It should have been Goulet, who also was talking about the crime issue then (and now).
I don't care if the candidate has been living on Mars for the past two decades, if they have the ability to successfully address crime, homelessness, substance abuse, school truancy and other problems, I'll vote for them (and I did vote for Krucoff). I don't need my candidates to have sent their kids to public school, I need them to make educational success a priority and to figure out how to empower experts in the field to do what's right for our schools. If you start making residency in DC for a prolonged period of time or sending your kids to public schools a litmus test for candidacy, you're going to miss out on people who might be able to take us in a better direction.
