"Standing" is the official term for essentially parking, but waiting in your car. It doesn't mean "standing" like on your two feet.

If you are there long enough to be blocked in then you're there too long.

DP. It doesn't sound like you've been to a busy airport recently. You can get blocked in literally AS you are pulling up.

That said, I think OP is FOS and deserves the ticket.

You pulled up and sent your kids inside to find their grandmother, which probably took a fair amount of time. And then grandmom, understandably, took a whole to walk out.

The curbside pickup is intended for people who are already there waiting. Not for those that have to be found inside first. You could have dropped off your kids and had them walk grandma out while you did another look of the airport. They could have found a bench to wait on if it took you longer than it took them.

In addition to being a security hazard, cars just sitting there and waiting around for passengers who are still inside the terminal really screw up the flow of traffic for the rest of us.

3 min is BS

Maybe at Reagan, but I’ve had officers ask me to move when I’ve been there less than a minute at smaller airports. One time I was picking up DH and literally had just put the car in park and was calling him to make sure he was coming out, and they were knocking on my window asking me to move.

You aren't not supposed to call your pickup from the curb lane. You are only supposed to be there for actual drop off or pick up. You need to find somewhere other than the arrivals curb to call your pickup. Almost all airports now have a cell phone lot that is only 1-3 min drive from the arrivals area for exactly this purpose.

So, I usually tell my pickup to call me when they are outside. If I don't get a call before I get to the airport, I find one of the several places to stop and park to do what you did. None of these are actually in the arrivals area where the passengers are waiting.

So, you were wrong and the officers were telling you that you were wrong, but you still don't seem to understand what you did wrong.

My guess is that the officer saw you on your phone and realized that the person you were picking up was still in the building, which is not how it works.

Terminal 1 is formally A correct? If so it's the tiny terminal. That airport is isn't big. You could easily have dropped off your child to get grandma, did a lap, and be back before they were back to the pickup area.

OR ASK THE OFFICER WHAT YOU SHOULD DO!

Anonymous wrote:You all are ridiculous. There is clearly a scenario where an older person can navigate an airport on her own, but the grandkid runs in to meet her, help with her bag, and show her where the driver is waiting. That seems signiciantly easier than parking and either have everyone walk back to the parking lot or having them stand and wait for the driver to go back to the parking lot and circle back to pick them up. Yes the OP could have circled, but if there was no back up of cars it seems reasonable to just wait for them.

I honestly thought this was satire till the last line.

I got home and at the arrivals pickup was three deep with cars parked there the entire 20 minutes it took DD to get from the cell phone lot to arrivals pickup— because three lanes of traffic were parked. Some with their cars turned off. One person in front of me was next to the curb and appeared to be napping. It was a zoo, and there was zero traffic enforcement. I saw no police in 20 minutes.

So, apparently at Dulles, departures is a car bomb scene waiting to happen, while it could never happen at arrivals.

Don’t be an A-hole and hang out at arrivals OP. Circle or wait in the cell phone lot. And YES, pay the ticket. It’s a post 9/11 security related offense at an airport in DC near the Pentagon. It may take a while, but having it outstanding will catch up with you. Don’t have it be something like getting flagged at security when you fly out of Dulles.

Pro tip: when the arrivals level at Dulles is that packed, the departures level is almost always empty. Last couple pickups I have done at Dulles it has been like that, and I had the arriving person go upstairs and picked them up on the departures level with zero delay or hassle. Heavily recommend

Noooo. Don’t share our secret.

Lovely story. This is not, however, how airports work.
