It’s a late and sudden change that puts kids who opted out of private for SWW in a place of having to decide school vs sport when other years didn’t have to choose.
It just seems that they should have said something before school decisions.

If crew is a priority, then pick JR as many kids do. We all have to make choices…the JR crew team receives exactly $0 from the school or DCPS. It is a club sport, not a DCPS sport.
This. Really unclear to me why families think that their child should have ALL the opportunities. Do your research. J-R crew is a club, not a school sport. If you want your child to have access to this club they have to be enrolled at J-R.

The best part about public school is that you can go back to JR if you choose. The fact that JR allowed other DCPS kids to row in their club was their decision and not in accordance with the regulations. Most of the rowing teams around this area are governed by a club rather than a school and did not make the same decision JR did. There was a crackdown on the non-school clubs because plenty were just doing what they wanted which in some cases was harming athletes. So it may seem sudden to you but if you are familiar with local high school rowing you would have known this has been in discussion for years.

Re Jelleff, it’s Much more convenient than Banneker. Yes, it’s only a difference of 40 min v 50 min walking, but by bus it’s 20-25 min, v 45-50 min for Banneker. How the mayor and DPR aren’t shamed into addressing this I don’t understand. Washington Post should keep the store it’s coming and see if it leads to any pressure.

We are in incoming 9th family with a daughter interested in rowing too - is there a way to organize as parents to start a Walls team?
I’d be willing to bet the parent volunteers who run the JR crew would be helpful if there were SWW parents wanting to stand up a club at Walls. Your eighth grade rower could check with the coaches.
Also, there are rowers who are current Walls freshmen, sophomores and juniors who may already be working on this so you could also try to reach them to express interest.
BTW, it’s a lot of work for the parents but the kids love it.
+1
The boathouse is actually one of the few convenient locations near Walls. Try to start a club team!
