I'm seeing post-BC kids not in top schools. Like mine. Very happy and surrounded by similarly bright kids.

Most highly ranked universities state quite clearly that academic rigor is the first thing they look at. So for kids that don't have a significant hook, doing well in the most challenging classes is pretty much the only way their application even gets looked at.

Kid #1 took AB Calc as a junior and BC Calc as a senior. Went to William and Mary and is double majoring in Math and Computer Science.

Kid # 2 took AB Calc as a junior and a one year IB math class as senior. Is at Northeastern majoring in business with a minor in Data Science.

DC took AP Stats and Stats Seminar - no Calc. Direct admit to Data Science in College of Engineering at large state school - honors program - will obvs be required to take several Calc classes for major.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. What I meant to say was that, if a student wants to minor in data science in college, they will likely need to take calculus in college. At the high school level, data science is sometimes presented as a way around calculus so my only point was that calculus may ultimately still be needed for a minor (or major) in data science. Students can certainly be admitted to a college data science program without high school calculus, as your DC shows.
