Remember how Europeans subjugated people all over the world and used skin color as a marker of civilized-ness? Kipling’s “White Man’s Burden”? The fact that English is a universal language? The racism has been around so long and has been so pervasive that they have shaped norms, subtly and not-so-subtly, that are now engrained in most societies, thereby internalized by those who were/are subjugated. Do your homework, think critically and don’t take everything at face value.

I think if a family was welcoming their first mixed race baby into the bloodline it would be natural to wonder about what combination of pigmentation the baby will emerge with. It would probably not be a great idea to speculate about it in front of the parent of color because they might take it as being racist whether it actually was or not. It seems like it's human nature to wonder but once it slips out of your mouth it's open to the interpretation of others.

My children are mixed and I never wondered how dark or light my children were going to look. My SIL sure did though 🙄

I don't recall either M or H saying whoever speculated about that was implying that darker would be a problem, seems like they just assumed that was the intent. Maybe that's racist.
