I would never do that unless the kid really didn’t like math.

NP here. We did that exact thing with our older child, and will do it again with our younger. The math 7H class is akin to prealgebra, and it's important to me (as a practicing engineer) that they fully grasp the foundation of math rather than rushing through just because you can. Both of my kids are STEM inclined, and will likely take many math classes in college. My child is a sophomore, and is not at all upset that he didn't move ahead. Lots of his peer group that did Algebra I in 7th grade have struggled at time in their math classes, whereas my child was able to easily keep pace with the classes.

But congrats to those whose kids tested in and are excited about it!

Your child might still get in. I think if the SOL is close they may evaluate other factors.

Who does the evaluation for the placement - the MS or ES teachers?

My DC got 96% on IOWA and 550 SOL. Consistent gets 4s on report cards and 100% correct on quizzes/tests in class. With that, I am uncertain, not so much because of algebra next year but down the road. DC seems to want to pursue it, though, so we’re leaning towards doing it.

Anyone opting out of algebra in 7th grade even though your DC scored above the IOWA and SOL cutoff?

Yikes.

The teacher was blunt, but they weren't wrong.

Their middle school has an appeals process which we may use. DC is a terrible standardized test taker, something I need to work on. Their math grades is a 97% average in honors math 6 (our pyramid has MS in 6th grade). We did not prep for the Iowa. Their math teacher indicated DC is ready for the challenge of algebra. I agree. Older DC took Iowa during quarantine and since Algebra would have been virtual, we opted them out for another year of prep. Right decision for them. They want to pursue a STEM career, it won’t stand in their way of success taking algebra as an 8th grader. We’re only considering appealing for younger DC because this is something DC wants. Otherwise I would be fine with Algebra in 8th grade for them as well.

Not trying to be mean, but I couldn't help but find this funny.[/quote

I don't think it is unreasonable. A teacher would have a pretty good idea of who are the better students able to handle which classes.
I can easily someone who scores 79 on IAAT able to handle algebra. The 97% in honors math is pretty significant, if the class is a tough one.

My DS scored 93 percentile. He qualified but I think I’m going to put him in pre algebra In 7th.

What else is included in the report? Wondering whether it’s worth getting it from the school. Also what percentile was 55/60?

We requested it. It breaks down each section and tells you what was tested, how many they answered correctly, incorrectly or missed.

Section I was Pre-alegbraic skills and concept.
Section II was Interpreting Mathematical information
Section III was Representating Relationships
Section IV was Using Symbols

What is the name of this report to request it from school? Is there a similar report for SOLs? Thanks,

See who sent the IAAT letter and make a request to that person for a full report. They will reach out to the central testing office. It will take a week or so to get the results.

I don't know about the SOL.

Same question. Is this something the school can provide? When I needed a copy of the VGA, that had to come from the central office. Wondering if this is the same.
