Congratulations! If she applied as TO, there’s no need to list her scores.

I appreciate seeing scores, decisions re submitting them & outcomes. Congrats

It's important to also know the major/school to which the student applied. There is a HUGE difference in acceptance rates, for example, between computer engineering and English, so the stats that will get you into the latter will not cut it for the former.

well this is disappointing

I feel sorry for so many hard-working, capable, and deserving students. It sounds like it’s basically a lottery drawing from thousands of qualified candidates.

It very much is a lottery now. No explanation for anything.

It is frustrating that it is so hard to predict. It seems like their short-answer questions are really make a difference in the decision since that's the only thing they look at beyond transcript and test scores if submitted. They don't even look at teacher recs or the common app essay.

How do you know this?

When DS applied a couple years ago they were very explicit about this. And, in the common data set, these are the only "very important" things:

Rigor
GPA
Essays - meaning only their short answer Qs
+
First gen
Race/ethnicity
Residency

Nothing else is "important". But they "consider":
Test scores
ECs
Talents
Personal qualities
Alumni
Work/volunteer

Most of the "considered" are likely considered mainly via the short answer Qs since that is the main place to express those qualities. Otherwise, it would only be in the brief activities list in the application.

What were her extracurriculars?

NHS, sport for three years (one varsity), Spanish club, volunteering at the animal shelter for two years, part-time job are the ones I remember.

Just checked and she also got offered aid worth about 85% of tuition.

Kind of blown away over here.

I know she kind of charmed and stalked the admissions officer for her school. So demonstrated interest was there. She had been deferred in the ED round.

DD accepted. TO, 3.97 GPA. Business. IB and AP courses.
I don’t think she thought she’d get in. Was accepted at JMU, I think she feels conflicted. Wants to be closer to home. Any advice??

DS got into both last year and chose JMU with no hesitation. It felt like home to him and he's had a great year so far, academically and socially. I'd suggest you attend both admitted student days if you can.

+1 i know kids happy at both of them, visit and see what her gut feeling is. DS got into both and had a strong preference for VT

What is Virginia Tech's history of selecting students from the waitlist?
Last year, we were able to offer 2,458 applicants from the waitlist. In 2021, we were able to offer 3,286 applicants from the waitlist. In 2020, we were able to offer 3,961 applicants from the waitlist. In 2019, we were unable to make any offers. In 2018, we were able to offer 1,896 applicants from our waitlist. In 2017, we were unable to make any offers. As you can see, the number of students ultimately receiving offers from the waitlist is highly unpredictable and variable.

This makes it sound like most years VaTech ultimately offered admission to hundreds/thousands of students on the waitlist? That seems much higher than most schools? Below is the information from the 2020-21 Common Data Set. Combined with the information on the website above, does this establish that 3,286 of 4,924 were offered admission but only 86 accepted (presumably because by July most had made other plans)? Am I missing something?

Number of qualified applicants offered a place on the waiting list: 8,690

Number accepting a place on the waiting list: 4924

Number of wait-listed students admitted: 86

No. I read it that 8690 applicants were notified they were put on the waitlist. Of those 8000+ students, 4924 decided they wanted to go on the waitlist. The other almost 4000 applicants decided to not be put on the waitlist. Only 86 were ultimately offered a spot. How many enrolled is unknown.

We are interested in knowing these waitlist statistics since my DD was waitlisted (NoVA resident, 3.8 UW/4.2W, 33 ACT). How are others reading them? For 2021 what does "were able to offer 3,286 applicants from the waitlist" mean? It seems inconsistent with "Number of wait-listed students admitted: 86"? Is the 86 number actually "enrolled" not admitted? Reading the website waitlist FAQs and common data set together does seem to suggest that in 2021 8,690 were offered waitlist spots, 4,924 stayed on the waitlist, 3286 were offered spots off the list and 86 students enrolled off the waitlist. Otherwise, what does the 3,286 number refer to? In the alternative, if VATech only offered 86 students admission off the waitlist, I would assume that a lot of student who stayed on the waitlist will have moved on. Just like the regular admissions cycle, wouldn't VA Tech need to make a lot more offers than spots to fill the final spots? But offering admission to 3,286 of 4,924 sure doesn't sound right either.......

TECH all the way! It has better nationwide recognition an more options. And, come on...hokie nation!! Enter Sandman...

I can honestly say this because I went to Tech as an undergrad and then got a stipend to go to JMU for grad school and transferred out after a year. Not a fan. I have a nephew who is a senior at JMU now and it is such a party school now, insanely so. He can't wait until graduation. He's done.

From this area, there are so many kids to ride home with and always a carpool seat available.

Kid at JMU who is not a partier. JMU is no different from any other college which has students who want to party. Some do and some don’t.

So, would you DC have chosen VT? Unlikely, especially if in state MD. Thus the deferral.

We live in VA..

Making the UMD CS (!wow);acceptance & $$$ all the more impressive. Grab that with both hands and congrats!

I think it is much harder to get into the engineering programs and that really skews the numbers.

But this forum is filled with kids with similar stats who did not apply to engineering who were waitlisted.
