Gilman outright failed to report rumors of faculty giving the boys alcohol. They can absolutely be sued for that. They have a legal obligation to report anything like that. Talk with your sons, people, even if they were former students there. This can easily escalate into a huge lawsuit and payouts, considering the perp was there for 15 years.
Well, first you’d have to prove that they actually knew about it, not “they must have known”.
If they were culpable, they should pay. But people are very naive to believe that an abuser can’t conceal abuse. They can, and do.
The more people who are in on it, the easier it is to cover-up… kinda like Hollywood — everyone knew, yet no one really wanted to be the bad guy and go to the cops. You are the naive one if you think sex abuse of young boys by one teacher can be a secret for a long 15 years. Adults at the school heard rumors and had a clear legal obligation to report. They decided not to report, maybe because the perpetrator’s father was on the school board. Maybe because no one wanted to be the bad guy and get fired. So much to unpack here.
But we do know that children were horrifically harmed for life. It’s often like having serious PTSD. It doesn’t go away, but hopefully, you just learn to somehow cope with the nightmares. Anyone who was sexually abused knows the horror.

This could happen anywhere. I know some of the teachers there and the head of the school and middle school, their own kids go there. I’m sure they had no idea, the abuse happened outside of school.
The ‘could happen anywhere’ is a grand myth, and has been explained in detail upthread. Any school harboring a rapist is not a great school to most parents.
Except it does happen everywhere, unfortunately.
Yes, it happens everywhere but at certain places, such as those with a culture like Gilman, it is MORE likely to happen.
Some places are breeding grounds for this kind of abuse.
Then why, if you Google search any school name + abuse do you get a result? Sidwell, St Albans, Maret, Deale
because money and power often corrupt people in positions of power. It's a lot easier to sweep this kind of stuff under the rug at a private school. it's a sad reality.
That isn’t true, there have been plenty of recent cases at area public schools. The bottom line is schools, camps, and youth sports are very attractive to pedaphiles and if they have no criminal history, they will still be hired.

Actual or constructive knowledge. The latter is the “should have known” - absolutely sufficient to impute civil liability under Maryland law.

+1000. People want to pretend that Gilman was uniquely neglectful and there was some grand coverup. That’s because it’s too scary for them to admit that it can happen anywhere, and that the fact that your kids are at a different school won’t protect them. It’s a terrifying thought, so people must find a way for the school to have been at fault.
