If the United States could only have 8 schools. This list is what would be dictated. They are irreplaceable.

The USAFA at Colorado Springs is at #217 for R&D expenditures in 2020;

USNA at Annapolis is at #322.

USMA at West Point is at #327.

Lots of funded medical research at JHU, but the medical school is located away from the undergrad campus so not sure how much it benefits the undergraduate students.

What criteria or standards are you using to designate these schools as the "top 8 most important higher ed institutions in the country" ?

While I agree that all 8 are great schools, leaving Michigan and the Univ. of Washington at Seattle clearly shows that your list is not based on research and development funding and expenditures.
