Have you seen any of the videos by the YouTube personality, Scambaiter? He intercepts scam calls and tries to warn the victims that they are not talking to an Amazon rep or whatever, but rather a scammer. Some of the victims refuse his intervention, insist they are not being scammed, and continue to send thousands of dollars to the scammers. You kinda remind me of them. I'm sorry to inform you that tour ignorance is being exploited for profit by morally corrupt politicians and media personalities.

1) the new rules don't take place for two years, so the status quo remains in effect until then, so I suppose Mary Cheh owns those

If the cops don't respond or file a report, it looks like crime is down. In reality, crime is most certainly not down.

It’s amazing. On Sunday the Mayor holds an all hands on deck meeting crime focused meeting for all the ANC commissioners that worked so hard to elect Frumin. The meeting where she, a lifelong city resident, said she feels less safe than in the 80s. And on Monday, the very next day, the ANC commissioners send the mayor a sharply worded joint letter about. . . . . parking passes! We’re all doomed.

I don’t think you really understand the criminal code rewrite. It redefines and reclassifies crimes and that makes it challenging for all those unwilling to invest more time than the likes of the WaPo EdBo could muster to compare penalties for the same crime between the two codes. You may consider it politically fashionable to paint the rewrite as weakening criminal penalties, but to do so without understanding it is quite silly. And if you’re not silly, you would acknowledge that the time between now and the new code coming in to effect allows a lot of time for the Council to engage meaningfully on the more controversial aspects and amend where need be. There are some aspects of the new legislation I don’t like - such as the potential to place further strain on the courts as those charged with misdemeanors request jury trails - but I’d much rather that gets debated and voted on directly by the Council than by further delaying the implementation of what all informed observers agree was a very necessary and long overdue overhaul of the code.

I don’t think that is true. Here’s why:

1. Post COVID there are significantly fewer people in DC, permanent residents, commuters, or tourists. So absolute reported crimes may be down, but on a per capita basis crime is actually much higher.
2. Due to decriminalization, there are fewer crimes to enforce (public drug use, turnstile jumping, public camping, etc.). So the absolute number is lower than in prior years.
3. There are 20% fewer police than in recent years, combined with the Ferguson effect, all suppress the number of crimes reported.
4. Large retail chains (the ones that have not left yet) are less link to report property crimes.
