Your platitudes have gotten us into this mess. Violent offenders need prison. Focus on making the prisons more effective, not keeping criminals on the streets.

We have more people in prison then the rest of the developed world and still more gun violence. Your arg doesn’t work. The problem is not that we don’t put enough people in prison. We need a different solution.

They said "violent" offenders. You shouldn't be in disagreement. Our jailing problem has to do with non-violemt offenders.

DC attracts unbalanced people. It is one of a handful of cities that are magnets for said, and it needs to be addressed by our lawmakers. Involuntary beds in St. E for these folks.

I remember being a kid, about 45 years ago now, and watching folks set themselves on fire on the nightly news on a fairly regular basis, I remember watching in horror and fascination and asking my mom why these people were doing that, and my mom said they were acts of protest, self-immolation, I will never forget those images or my wonder and amazement at the courage necessary to follow through on such a thing. Such desperation, despair, or in its purest form believing the rightness of a cause so much that you are willing to make such a sacrifice. People are capable of such complexity.

Needless to say, I think this country has a massive mental health crisis on its hands. There are a lot of very messed up people running around, a bunch of pissed-off, angry rebels lacking a legitimate cause. We need something big to right this ship. I am not sure what that will be, but I do know that it can't come fast enough.

And it’s fruitcake catch-and-release policies like this that are the problem. Twenty bucks days that this is not this “young persons “ first encounter with the law

Hold accountable in jail and service work
Treat the underlying mental illness
Train to do some kind of work that will benefit society
Release after clear that perp has served time, is in ongoing treatment that stabilizes the mental illness, can contribute to society and unlikely to reoffend.

However US has highest incarceration rate in the world, and has commercialized jail services, so adequate mental health treatment is unlikely. This contributes to creating life long, unstable criminals.

No, not a witness. I saw that live and it was about two hours after the shooting. He was not being led away with any kind of urgency that suggested he was the shooter. But it wasn’t a person fleeing the scene in fear, either. He was walked out in between groupings of residents being evacuated from the ANA apartment building.
