But, we stayed in FCC for the schools. There are some really nice homes in Alexandria, but then we would need to send the kids to private, and the school commute has not been worth it. I guess it really depends on what you need in terms of schools- FCC has an amazing IB program, and Alexandria has...a lot of problems.
Also to get back to the pot issue- I work on Fairfax St. in Old Town and there is almost always a group of men smoking pot on the corner. I don't mind though, our street has never felt unsafe.
So I love Old Town for its historic character, it's unique and truly beautiful, but "liveliness?" I honestly never experienced much of that. I lived off of N. Fayette for 15 years and it was never lively. It always felt pretty much dead, at least in the areas around me.

When did you live off of N. Fayette? When some of those buildings went up in that corridor, the staff at the US Attorney's office and the other fed offices in the same building used to talk about live drug deals going on visible from their windows lol. The streets are still off limits during rush hour for heaven's sake because it was a known drug corridor and people on their way home would use the street to make their buy as they were heading south. If you're going to BS, at least try to be a teensy bit believable.
