And they have the backing of the military to force the country to go along with socialism. Without that type of force, the educated and successful people in the private sector would leave. If Mamdani makes NYC socialist, but the rest of the country remains free, I don't understand why the 1% would choose to stay in NY to support free child care, free bus fare, etc. for everyone else. what is their incentive to stay?
No hedge fund manager or trust fund baby - the core of Manhattan - is moving because of a minor increase in local taxes. Mamdani's policies are much more impactful for the MC and UMC. Rent control - that is a very big deal in NYC. That's the local government choosing winners and losers. And that's been pretty disastrous overall for most people. When you take all those apartments off the market rate, it vastly increases the costs for new renters. Getting rid of rent control and building new housing is much more effective, but progressives don't like that for lots of reasons. And defunding the police is obviously very consequential. NYC toys with out of control violence from time to time - and that is very impactful for everyone. Obviously there needs to be a balance between addressing social, mental health, and addiction issues and dealing with violent crime. But that's not a straightforward thing. Social workers will get murdered if that's the first response. You can't legislate these things.
My sense of Mamdani is that he is a very privileged young man with an enormous ego. He's never had a 9-5 job in his life, so he doesn't get that struggle at all. He seems like a TikTok guy - hate the Jews, be performative about everything. Not a serious man. Even for a 33 year old, which these days are generally big babies with an extended adolescence that goes on and on. I really don't think a guy like this is going to win Staten Island, Queens, most of Brooklyn, or the Bronx. Mamdani has zero connection with the working and middle class - which is the norm for Democrats these days and why they continue to lose.
