Twitter was on track to lay off a good chunk of their workforce even before the Musk takeover shenanigans started. They probably wouldn’t have been as crude about it but the warning signs were there.

Beyond what anyone thinks of Twitter as a platform, or its hiring/firing practices, what Musk is doing is damaging the brand, and making it untenable for companies to rely on it. Those companies are their source of revenue. It's a bad business model to piss off one's clients.
