Why did the democrats spend so much money in this race? Is it because they have too much money? Or is there a chance to flip it there?

It's not emotion. He's got Covid-19 and he's holding it at bay with medication. It's why he's refusing the Covid-19 testing. He knows and he doesn't want to be be tested. Like Trump, he's just hoping he can keep ahead of the diagnosis until he can get Barrett passed off to the full Senate.
It would serve them right to have him infect the Judiciary Committee and not have a vote because several of the over 70 year old members either get sick or have to quarantine.
