The fictional helicopter ride has made it into the rally speech. Can you imagine what any media outlet would do to any other candidate who mixed up Wi||ie Brown with Jerry Brown?

Lawrence O’Donnell is absolutely right. I couldn’t believe MSNBC gave Trump a free hour+ of airtime to campaign and treated this like a real press conference. A few years ago, they wouldn’t carry his remarks live and they’d just say that they’d show viewers anything truly newsworthy, if there was anything.
I disagree with only one thing O’Donnell says in this clip. You don’t fact check Trump by putting
Kamala’s degrees up on the screen when Trump calls her stupid. You make people consider the source. The screen should say, “Man who once asked if you could stop a hurricane by detonating a nuclear bomb inside it calls Kamala Harris stupid” Or how about, “Candidate whose own former Secretary of State called him an ‘f’ing moron’ calls Kamala Harris stupid.”
Why? That hour+ of airtime was the best evidence that Trump is mentally declining rapidly and that he is no longer fit for office. MSNBC is known to lean pretty far left and so their talking heads talking about Trumps' decline and incompetence would only be chalked up to their liberal leaning and would not be nearly as effective. But letting him ramble and show that he is fully in the throes of age-related mental decline will speak to many more voters than the talking heads criticizing him.
Trump is his own worst enemy at this point. The campaign knows, just like the Biden campaign knew about Biden's age and decline. The Trump campaign is now trying to do what Biden's campaign did and hide him. Hence why the number of public appearances for Trump have been limited. The difference is that whenever they let Biden out in public, he was rehearsed and scripted and he would largely stick to the script which would hide his decline. Trump on the other hand, refuses to follow teleprompters and scripts, and when they let him out, he will not stick to the script, so he shows just how far he has declined every time he gets out.
Trump has peaked. His only hope was to challenge Biden because he will not be able to beat anyone else. Harris is a mediocre candidate at best and she is still likely to win pretty easily because her opponent is Trump.

Trump has declined from 2016, but not as dramatically as you’re suggesting. Even back then, he wasn’t articulate and didn’t have a real grasp of the issues or the functioning of the federal government or the importance of diplomacy. He didn’t know policy and didn’t know actual facts. He always liked to speak off the cuff, jumping from one topic to another, as things pop into his head. His only real talent has always been shameless self promotion, but he was successful in 2016 because
1) The Apprentice had fooled a lot of people into thinking he was a very successful and shrewd businessman, who wasn’t a career politician, and would be a change agent in DC
2) He tapped into Christian Nationalism and far right wing discontent over political correctness and social justice warriors. He insulted the people they wanted to insult. He said the quiet part out loud
3) A lot of people just didn’t like Hillary Clinton
He’s still a contender this year because his supporters favor
-tax cuts that benefit the wealthy
-rolling back corporate regulations
-the Federalist Society selecting judicial nominees
-dismantling or kneecapping federal agencies
-isolationist foreign policy
and because they
-want to suppress undocumented immigration at our Southern border absolutely any way possible — including inhumane policies, if necessary
-don’t think most women who want to have an abortion should have one
-are Christian Nationalists (this is a minority; I’m not claiming most Republican voters fall into this category)
Those are the voters who actually have good reason to vote for Trump. There are other voters are simply uninformed and misinformed, and they’ve invested years in defending the indefensible whenever Trump’s malfeasance has been pointed out. They still believe he’s a very successful entrepreneurial whiz who will create a thriving economy that will enrich them. After 8 years, they’re not about to admit they may have been wrong about Trump.
Trump’s batsh!t crazy rambling, stunted vocabulary and habitual lying don’t hurt him nearly as much as they should. Even his voters don’t like a lot of what he says and don’t think he’s a good person, but those things don’t influence how they vote.

Yes and yes. But here's how Fox News covered it:
https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-says-biden-had-right-run-dem-party-took-away
It does not mention the lies, the ridiculous MLK crowd size comparison, the bonkers helicopter story or the word salad on mifepristone when the reporter asked a yes/no question. They basically hand-picked the least crazy things he said and quoted them.
Which is a journalistic feat, wasn't it?
