I keep going back to the call her husband made to the doctors a week prior. He said she was acting like a zombie. Her meds were adjusted and bam— one week later, the unthinkable. Obviously her situation was precarious and very difficult to treat. There is a fine line to titrating psych meds and some cases are intractable.

Also, there is no scenario where she will get off scot free as some posters are saying. If not guilty due to insanity— she will be in a locked ward for a very long time to come. These are not cushy rehab facilities at all.

In MD we have the Clifton Perkins Hospital for the criminally insane— she would likely end up somewhere like that. A pretty grim way to spend your life, especially as a paraplegic.

Of course not - people in their right mind do not kill their kids. But, having a mental illness does not excuse you for killing those kids.

I feel bad for Cora, Dawson, and Callan.

We truly lack understanding of severe mental illness.

Weird response.
We hold others accountable when they do bad things and are mentally ill. Why would she be the exception?

I have been saying this from the beginning, was Jeffrey Dahmer mentally stable? Ted Bundy? What about most of the school shooters, were they all stable mentally? No, as a matter of fact many of them were also on psych meds, like Lindsay, but we crucified these young mentally ill kids. How about all the other potentially mentally ill mothers who killed their kids who are now serving life sentences in general pop prisons? What about them? We gotta stop with the #iamlindsay crap, no, no you are not. Like school shootings, we’re going to end up with copycat crimes thanks to the media coverage and the misplaced empathy. If we as a society have never related to, or empathized with murderers, even mentally ill ones, we aren’t going to start now. Hell no.

Jeffrey Dahmer was a serial killer who embalmed and disemboweled people and hid them in his freezer. He had a long history of asocial and frightening behavior. This woman was a highly esteemed labor nurse with no criminal record. Postpartum psychosis is real.

She murdered a baby. The fact that you’re holding her up as “but she’s not as bad as Dahmer!” would be laughable if it weren’t so disgusting.

I'm sorry, but PPD is not "disgusting." It's a devastating diagnosis and worlds away from Dahmer.

The people who actually know the person and the case are not claiming a PPD defense. Once again, more slowly for you, SHE SAW MULTIPLE DOCTORS AND HAS NO DIAGNOSIS OF PPD.

You’re welcome.

PPD IS NOT A FORMAL DIAGNOSIS IN THE DSM. THERE IS ONLY DEPRESSION OR ANXIETY WITH POSTPARTUM ONSET. You're welcome also.

HER ONLY DIAGNOSIS IS GAD. GAD IS NOT AN EXCUSE FOR MURDER. SORRY.

Who cares though, and I guarantee her GAD was preexisting, undiagnosed maybe, but there, prior to all her pregnancies. She chose to put too much on her plate and surprise surprise became more anxious and depressed. Maybe we need to learn better decision making skills, learn to ignore peer pressure and learn some basic coping skills. Andrea Yates was a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic, GAD is not in the same league, sorry.

Umm no thanks

I think a lot of sympathizers of Lindsay are mothers that view what Lindsay did as incomprehensible. It is the last thing in the world that a mother would do to their own children and that's why they sympathize- knowing that no sane mother could do such a thing. You can't compare murdering random people to murdering your own children. Lindsay has no life going forward, she will have to live the rest of her days with what she did and also as a paraplegic- it really doesn't matter if she is in prison or at home- her life will be hell going forward.

Same goes for all mothers who murder their kids and fathers, what father would murder his own children? We need to look at the bigger picture here, why is Lindsay, or any woman, given a pass because a mental problem? If she lacked capacity to determine right from wrong this shouldn’t been picked up atbsome point by the team of psych professionals following her. Yes, what Lindsay did is incomprehensible, same as what Chris Watts did. I’m sure Chris Watts appeared to absolutely love his children too and maybe he really did. Maybe his reason for killing his kids was identical to why Lindsay killed hers. Maybe he went temporarily insane, because no sane man would do such a thing.

Interesting - I thought of Chris Watts too when reading about this case last night. I see so many similarities between them

I don’t know why but I don’t feel a lot of sympathy towards her. I’m heartbroken for the kids and the dad. I think some people in this world are just pure evil. I don’t know how anyone even insane could do that

This is shocking to me. I had no idea. Why haven’t I heard about these other cases?

Because they’re not well-off, reasonably attractive and “relatable” and white.

Well then why did we hear so much about Andrea Yates? She doesn’t fit that profile except that she is white.

Why do we hear more about some than others? Because clearly there are many many parents and particularly moms who kill their kids that never make national news? Why does the media cherry pick these cases? There’s no rhyme or reason.

So I guess I don’t see how to compare it to, say, a school shooter who is randomly killing fellow students. Are there cases where a new mother opened fire in a mall or something? Seems like this post partum psychosis is a unique phenomenon that results only in the deaths of mothers/their children, no?

I mean, does it matter that the victim profile is different? At the end of the day, they kill an innocent person, why would they be treated differently?

There is even another murder case in Duxbury where the perpetrator claims he was hearing voices and killed his father. Why is this any different?

This. I had a friend who last year was murdered, along with his wife, by their adult son, who has a list of psychiatric diagnoses as long as your arm, with an equally long list of meds (which he was taking) to match. If Lindsey gets off, he should too. After all, they only killed their families “and didn’t shoot up a school or anything.”

No no no. Mentally ill men cannot be excused from their crimes. Only young, white, mentally ill women.
