Well it IS true that the Western views on self-determination and regime changes have been pegged squarely to whether the U.S. likes whoever is self-determinatin'. If the U.S. happens to not like the country, then it's OK to invade it and depose the government and do whatever.

And that’s the exact point I was trying to discuss. To me, siding with the current Ukrainian regime over the seperatist regime is just the latest of example of the US picking sides based on who it wants to be in power. The US literally backed the separatists that overthrew Yanukovich in 2014 — why wasn’t the US upset about Ukraine’s sovereignty in 2014? Because the pre-2014 government was not aligned with the west. Now that they have a pro-western government in Ukraine, Ukraine’s sovereignty MUST be protected and the separatists should be squashed.

I can’t help but seeing it this way and I think it’s fair to discuss maturely without just total dismissal.

Isn’t the current Ukrainian government essentially a seperatist group from the old Ukrainian government? Didn’t we arm the Free Syria Army, another separatist group, in their battle against Bashar Al Assad? Is russia not allowed to choose a separatist group that they want to advocate for?

No, Zelensky wasn't part of that group, and he won in a landslide, winning throughout the country. He is the legitimately elected President of Ukraine, which is a flawed democracy, but one nonetheless which was making progress.

And THAT is why Putin invaded. Can't let your people get any ideas from looking at Ukraine.
