Four tourists tried swimming in red flag conditions and drowned. Don’t know if there were any mitigating conditions, like alcohol. I believe all were men.
yep, red flag swimming can kill anyone
In Florida you can get arrested for swimming when the red flags are up. The life guards do not want to drown while saving your stupid drunk self. In the DR they don't care.
But in Florida you can be shot dead if you make a u turn in a driveway you don't own when you accidentally make a wrong turn.

Learn to swim
Know with whom you are vacationing
Secure valuables
Look for red flag warnings
Don't swim if you don't feel well
Swim cautiously regardless of swimming ability
Just as you visit any country, check if you need any shots (no not tequila shots) but get your immunizations before you leave if you need.
Be cautious of limitless alcohol
Check in with people with whom you are vacationing
Others?
